Notes: : Of 26 patients infested with Stronglyoides stercoralis 10 (38.5%) were asymptomatic without systemic or cutaneous signs. Nine patients (34.6%) presented with systemic complaints only and seven patients (26.9%) had systemic and cutaneous manifestations. Further observations of the skin lesions on four of those with systemic and cutaneous manifestations revealed linear urticarial bands, extending to several centimeters within 1 hour and persisting up to many days, waiting and waning. Blood examination showed eosinophilia in all patients. These findings confirm the concept that larva currens even alone should be considered a cutaneous sign of systemic disease.

Notes: Kuwait, situated in the north-west corner of the Arabian Gulf, has an arid climate with very hot dry summers and mild winters. Sandstorms are a regular climatic feature. occurring most frequently in summer. Before the mid-1950s allergy was not considered to be a problem. Since then it has become a major cause of morbidity; 18% of the population are reported to suffer from its manifestations. Over the past 3 years 1000 asthmatic patients attending a central clinic have been carefully studied. The present paper analyses various aspects of the asthmatic condition in this desert country.

Notes: Alternate methods of parboiling of paddy, in place of conventional steam-parboiling, for obtaining improved hydration ability in the parboiled rice were explored. Ratnachudi variety, a medium-grained, tall indica, high-amylose rice, was used. The paddy was soaked in warm water to a saturation moisture level (ca 30%, w.b.). The soaked paddy was dried by either exposing it to very hot air (150°—200°C) or by roasting it in hot sand (250°—300°C) for a few minutes. It was observed that under appropriate high-temperature conditions paddy got simultaneously dried and parboiled by both the above treatments. Parboiled rice so produced was examined for appearance (translucence, color), milling breakage, alkali degradation pattern and starch retrogradation. It was found to be quite comparable to normal steam-parboiled rice in all respects, except that it showed the desirable property of improved hydration ability due to lowering of starch retrogradation. Possible development of the technique into commercial process is indicated.

Notes: The thermal expansion of In2O3 powder was determined over the temperature range 30–968°C using X-ray techniques. The values of Δa/aO, as determined by the least-squares method, are given by Δa/aO = (7.20±0.06) x 10−6 T+ (1.15±0.08)±10−9 T2. The values of the cell constant at various temperatures were determined by extrapolation techniques using the extrapolation function ½(cos2&thgr;/sin&thgr; + cos2&thgr;/&thgr;). The accurate value of the cell constant at room temperature is aO = 10.1194±0.0005 Å, at 30°C. From the sharpness of the high-temperature photographs, it is concluded that no dissociation of In2O3 powders takes place on heating in vacuum up to 968°C.

Notes: [Auszug] We have fractionated rabbit and mouse kidney and liver by a modification of de Duve's method10 and find that activator of plasminogen lies mainly in the heavy granule (lysosomal) fraction (15,000g) (ref. 11) though a little is present in the microsomal fraction (36,000 g). Notes: [Auszug] Lack and Rogers7 reported the liberation of chondroitin sulphate from cartilage in vitro by the blood protease, plasmin. They suggested that the rapid chondrolysis which occurs in joint infections by streptococci and staphylococci might be due to kinases produced by these organisms activating ...
