Notes: Abstract In this article, we present a comparative study of the Raman spectra of alkali halides in relation to the lattice dynamics ofBorn andRaman. It is shown that the experimentally observed limit of the second-order spectra in almost all the cases can be explained well by the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation. It is also seen, while, an explanation of the second-order Raman spectrum of a crystal of diamond or zinc blende structure requires the frequencies from the critical points,W, Γ, X andL inBorn's analysis, the frequencies fromΓ, X andL alone are sufficient and necessary for an interpretation of the same onRaman's model. Some similarities in the determination of the long wave properties of crystals like elastic constants and limiting frequencies of the lattice vibrations in the symmetry directions in both the models are pointed out.

Notes: Abstract Ductile amorphous foils of Fe80B20 have been sputter-deposited. We report here the results of structural and magnetic studies on these samples. Structural analysis shows slight differences between amorphous foils and ribbons. From the high-field measurements (H〈15 T) the magnetic moment of Fe is estimated as 2.1±0.02 at 4.2 K in agreement with the value reported for ribbons. However, the magnetization is less temperature dependent in the foil, as compared to the ribbon. This result would indicate a lesser fluctuation in the exchange integralJ and hence lesser variations in the local environment of Fe. Finally the thermal stability is shown to be higher in the foils. It is suggested that sputtering technique could be used to prepare amorphous foils of large area for certain applications.

Notes: Abstract A method which allows calculation of recovery rates and work hardening coefficients for creep from simple constant velocity compression experiments is described. Stressing rates and straining rates are computed from the measured load-time curves, and these quantities are then fitted to the universal form of the Bailey-Orowan equation for creep. The techniques were applied to B2 crystal structure Fe-39.8 at % Al intermetallics and the directionally solidified eutectic alloyγ/γ′-α compression tested between 1200 and 1400 K. The recovery rates were found to be functions of nominal strain rate, stress, and temperature; the hardening coefficients were dependent only on temperature. Hardening coefficients for the aluminides are small (〈0.002 of the elastic modulus) and are believed to be due to the lack of dislocation barriers. A more typical value for the hardening coefficient (∼ 0.05 of the elastic modulus) was observed inγ/γ′-α. Recovery rates and hardening coefficients can be described in terms of stress and temperature, and the equations used to estimate creep rates.
