Notes: Abstract The electronic conductivity of active battery materials has seldom been investigated in detail. The problem is to separate the resistance contributions located in the particle cores and in the particle surfaces. In this paper battery PbO2, the best-known model substance, has been studied.

Notes: Abstract In the transition zone between phases of different conduction types, the electrical current is not only unevenly distributed, but also, in many cases, local or temporal instabilities occur. Most of these effects have already been observed, but until now, no theoretical treatment has been published. As a straightforward extension of the linear mathematical treatment of the current distribution in porous electrodes1, an explanation of two classes of purely electrical instabilities can be given. Beyond these purely electrical instabilities, a number of more complicated cases has to be considered. These are local instabilities caused by overlapping singularities, e.g. spots of minor density or conductivity, local and temporal instabilities caused by thermal breakthroughs and instabilities caused by hydrodynamical eddies. Moreover the current distribution shows local and temporal fluctuations as the result of the granular structure of the transition zone.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By means of metallic probes, the local distribution of the internal resistance in galvanic cells is measured. The theoretical base of the new method is derived from the theory of current distribution. As exemple, measurements on dry cells (IEC: R20) are reported. Between carbon rod and manganese core, between core and electrolyte and on the zinc are border-resistances located. These resistances are measured quantitatively the first time. During discharge and during drying out, the border resistances are much more influenced than the resistance e.g. of the black mix. The electronic conductivity of porous electrodes can be measured separated from the ionic parts by application of the new method.

Description / Table of Contents: Contribution to the Problem of Pressure-less Measurements of the Electric Conductivity of Powder MaterialsTwo authors (1, 2) proposed to use the electric conductivity of a loosely packed powder bed as the electric characteristics of the power material. The authors got reproducible and intercomparable results applying their method on various oxide powders, e.g. reduced MnO2 and mixed oxides. This is in contradiction to the common experience that in the range of small pressure, reliable results hardly can be obtained. Obviously, some special conditions have made the good results possible. Here below, the pressure-less method has been applied to four different powders: a species of MnO2, copper, Cd(OH)2 and PbO2.As the principal result, it has to be stated that the pressure-less method delivers reliable results only in the case of such powders, whose grain core resistance doesn't have to be neglected against the contact resistance between the grains. This condition is fulfilled here only in the case of manganese dioxide. Probably, the oxide powders under study in (1, 2) also have been in the correct range. In spite of this, the pressure-less method may not be applied on metal powders or on the metal-likek PbO2 powder. Also in the case of Cd(OH)2 masses, severe objections exist.
