Notes: Summary We have developed a simple method for the isolation of endothelial cells from human umbilical artery. The method provides a sufficient number of cells to be of experimental value. The presence of factor VIII antigen specific for endothelium has been demonstrated by immunofluorescence as well as by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase immune complex method.

Notes: Abstract Shock-loading experiments are performed on single-crystal specimens of BaZnGeO4 (BZG) between 13 and 51 GPa using a propellant gun and a two-stage light gas gun. Observation by an optical microscope reveals that all the shocked specimens are made of fragmented blocks of 10 ∼ 100 μm in size. X-ray analyses indicate that the samples shocked to pressures above 41 GPa became a polycrystalline state of BZG with a weakly textured structure. A small amount of dissociation products of BaGeO3 (pyroxene type) and ZnO (wurtzite type) are detected in this pressure range. Between 27 and 19 GPa, a new phase which is thought to be produced by considerable deformations in the ring structure consisting of ZnO4 and GeO4 tetrahedra is observed. Below 19 GPa, shocked specimens are brought into a well aligned mosaic structure, but no significant change in the crystal structure is detected.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this paper was to clarify the gluability and adhesion mechanism of polypropylene as a hot melt wood adhesive for plywood bonding. The gluability of plywood glued with nonpolar and modified polypropylene satisfied approximately the specification of the Japan Agricultural Standard, Designation Types 1 and 2. The moisture content (8 to 25 %) of the core veneer had no recognizable effect on gluability. The durability of polypropylene and that of modified polypropylene were the same as that of melamine-formaldehyde resin. Molten polypropylene made good contact with veneer surface, and penetrated into the lumina of wood cells and other spaces. In the separated glue lines, casts of glue which had penetrated into the vessels had many mushroom-like projections which had filled the bordered pit cavities. It was indicated that the anchoring effect of polypropylene which had penetrated into various wood elements and spaces in the veneer contributed dominantly to the gluability.

Notes: In order to discuss hydrogen transfer in the skeletal fragmentation of thioethers on electron impact, mass spectra of a series of 2-n-alkylthio-5-aminothiazolo [5,4-d]pyrimidines have been determined. To aid the interpretation of the hydrogen migration, deuterium-labeled compounds which are substituted with deuterium in each position of 2-n-butylthio-5-aminothiazolo-pyrimidines were studied. By correlation of the spectra obtained from such labeled compounds, the initial hydrogen migration in the fragmentation to produce [M — SH], [MS — CH3] and m/e 184 ions is concluded to be as follows: migration of the α-hydrogen atom to the sulfur induces formation of the [M — SH] ion; migration of the β-hydrogen atom to the sulfur or nitrogen atom by a McLafferty rearrangement induces formation of the m/e 184 ion; and migration of γ-hydrogen atom to the sulfur induces formation of the [M — SCH3] ion.

Notes: The bioluminescence of the American firefly Photinus is due to the reaction of 2-(6-hydroxybenzothiazol-2-yl)-Δ2-1,3-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (“firefly luciferin”) with the enzyme luciferase in the presence of ATP and magnesium ion. In the crustacean Cypridina, on the other hand, the bioluminescence is due to the reaction of a luciferase with 8-(3-guanidinopropyl)-6-indol-3-yl-2-(1-methylpropyl)-3,7-dihydroimidazo[1,2-a]-pyrazin-3-one (“Cypridina luciferin”). The luciferin in Latia is 1,3,3-trimethyl-2-(4-formyloxy-3-methyl-3-butenyl)-1-cyclohexene and that in Renilla is a tryptamine derivative that has not yet been accurately identified; the luciferins of other luminescent organisms are not yet known. A review is given of the investigations which have been carried out on the above luciferins and the course of the luciferin-luciferase reaction is examined. Numerous spectral data obtained during the examination of these compounds are included in the text.
