Notizen: In this article the author, using case study material, considers the motives which induce individuals either to join associations or to free-ride. In particular, he concludes that analysis and thinking on the free-rider problem needs to be pursued in a specific, well defined manner.

Notizen: A recently marketed direct filling resin, Isosite, does not have an inorganic filler. This material is offered as a hand-mixed, two-paste system (Isopast) and is also available in capsulated form and as an ultraviolet activated sytem. Since it is well known that direct filling resins used hitherto are capable of causing pulpal irritation, especially in deep cavities, the pulpal response to Isopast was investigated. The experimental animals were twenty-four vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Under general anaesthesia a labial cavity was cut in each of the eight incisor teeth (maxillary and mandibular) of each animal. In each animal two cavities were filled with unlined Isopast, two with Isopast over a lining of calcium hydroxide cement, two with silicate cement and two with zinc oxide/eugenol cement. The animals were killed at intervals of 2, 28 and 56 days. The teeth recovered were decalcified and stained for histological examination. Of the total of 192 specimens sixty-five were discarded, two because of accidental pulpal exposure, one because of leakage and sixy-three because of technical defects in the preparation of the material, leaving 126 specimens available for assessment. This was done independently by three examiners who did not know which materials had elicited the reactions observed. It was found that after 2 days unlined Isopast caused more pulpal disturbance than other materials. After 28 and 56 day intervals lined Isopast caused less disturbance than the other materials. The maker's recommendation that linings should be used is confirmed.

Notizen: The physical removal of plaque from dentures by brushing is important in the maintenance of oral health. However, there is a danger that brushing will abrade acrylic resin. A machine using a rotary brushing action was therefore utilized for laboratory tests of possible cleaning pastes, employing a toothbrush with good access and adaptability to denture surfaces. Crest toothpaste produced the most abrasion on acrylic resin, Dentu-Creme the least. An experimental paste produced an appreciably lower abrasion rate. Self-cured specimens wore more than heat-cured ones. The rate of abrasion decreased as the temperature was raised. Brushing with water alone, or with a 10% solution of soap, did not produce detectable wear. The wear produced by proprietary cleaners when hand brushing the lingual flanges of dentures and flat blanks of heat-cured acrylic was also measured. Boots denture cleaning paste produced the greatest abrasion, Dentu-Creme the least. The wear measured by reference to a glass plane was at least twice that recorded by the decrease in depth of a groove. The machine did not quantitatively produce the same abrasion as hand brushing, nor did it qualitatively rank the pastes in the same order of abrasiveness. The clinical relevance of these results is discussed.

Notizen: The interrelationship between reduced cell separation rate, reduced imbibition value and reduced pectin solubility was investigated with reference to reduced cooking rate in Phaseolus vulgaris also termed the hardbean phenomenon. It was found that reduced imbibition value and reduced pectin solubility can both cause a reduction in the rate of cell separation during cooking of beans and hence an increase in their cooking time and that these two factors act synergistically. Accompanying symptoms are solute leakage during soaking due to membrane breakdown, phytin catabolism and pectin demethylation, all of which are key factors in the development of hardbean.

Notizen: A comparison has been made between two Warner-Bratzler (WB) shear devices, differing in their method of operation, used in measuring tenderness of meat samples treated to produce a wide range, in both myofibrillar and connective tissue structural strength. Estimates of parameters measured from the shear deformation curves obtained from the two systems were highly correlated and both systems showed similar and significant responses to the treatments used to modify the structural components of meat.

Notizen: Nitrous oxide concentrations (V/V) at the delivery Rotameters block, nasal mask, pharynx and venous blood, were compared. There was a dilution of approximately 50% of the delivered nitrous oxide at the nasal mask which was further reduced in the pharynx. Venous blood concentrations 10 minutes after inhalation of nitrous oxide were low but as would be calculated from pharyngeal concentrations. After 5 minutes of oxygenation venous blood nitrous oxide concentrations were still relatively high. A total of 92% of subjects experienced a satisfactory effect with 30% nitrous oxide or less in the pharynx.
