Notes: Noradrenaline induced vasodilation in isolated perfused eel or trout gills was inhibited by propranolol, aβ-adrenergic blocking agent. The noradrenaline effect was much reduced in gills of fish which had been kept in 1 mg/l solutions of the detergent LAS (linear alkylate sulphonate; 12C chain length). LAS produced concentration-dependent vasodilation, which was inhibited by propranolol, in eel and trout gills. Noradrenaline produced additional vasodilation in eel and trout gills which had been dilated by 2.10−8m LAS but had no effect on trout gills perfused with 2.10−7m LAS. Gills from trout which had been kept in 0.1 mg l-1 LAS responded to noradrenaline normally but the propranolol inhibition appeared to be potentiated.

Notes: [Auszug] A GLASGOW University Exploration Society expedition to the uninhabited Island of Mingulay (Nat. Grid NL 056783), some twelve miles south of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, was made during June 21-July 14, under the leadership of Mr. J. F. Robertson. The Island is essentially made up of rocks of the ...

Notes: Summary The anatomy and blood system of the kidney in the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, was studied after injecting microfil into nephrons or the arterial system. Renal arteries arose at irregular intervals from the dorsal aorta and gave rise to a regular arrangement of afferent arterioles supplying the network of glomerular capillaries. Nephron units were arranged in two longitudinal series on each side of the glomerular capillaries, with the capsule of each nephron closely related to the capillary network. A short neck segment lead into the convoluted proximal segment, which accounted for over half the length of each nephron and was surrounded by a network of capillaries and sinusoids supplied by efferent glomerular arterioles. The end of each proximal segment formed the descending limb of a nephron loop, which lay parallel to the ascending distal limb and the end of each collecting duct. Peritubular blood flow in this region was generally opposite the flow of tubular fluid and blood eventually drained into large thin-walled sinuses connected to the post-cardinal vein.

Notes: Abstract A Weyl geometry with a gauge-invariant, Riemannian subgeometry is used to geometrize the combined Einstein-Maxwell theory. A generalized Hamilton-Jacobi equation from particle mechanics emerges as an immediate consistency requirement. The time-independent, Coulomb field case is found to include at least lowest-order quantum effects as in wave mechanics. Possible microscopic entropy is identified.

Notes: Abstract Four diploid human cell types (lymphocytes, fibroblasts, amniotic fluid cells, and hepatocytes) were fused to mouse hepatoma cells, HH. HH synthesized and secreted several liver-specific gene products including albumin, transferrin, and alpha-fetoprotein. The resulting interspecific hybrids were compared to determine whether or not the pattern of human hepatic gene expression was similar when these various cells were fused with the mouse hepatoma line. The expression of six human hepatic genes was examined, including albumin, alpha-fetoprotein, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, alpha-l-antitrypsin, and haptoglobin. Albumin was most frequently expressed while alpha-fetoprotein was not detected in any of the hybrids studied. The patterns of expression of human serum proteins differed between the hybrid series. Hybrids derived from human fibroblasts produced primarily albumin, while those derived from lymphoblastoid cells and amniocytes had a higher frequency of clones secreting alpha-l-antitrypsin. The findings reported here suggest that the frequency of hybrid clones expressing human hepatic gene products and the array of proteins produced are influenced by the histogenetic state of the human parental cell type.
