Notes: [Auszug] We have used X-chromosome-linked phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) isoenzymes as markers to determine the number of cells from which skin papillomas develop. Because of inactivation of one of the two X chromosomes in each somatic cell in female mice during embryogenesis, only one of the two PGK genes ...

Notes: Abstract Adhnll is an ethyl methanesulfonate induced mutant that lacks detectable alcohol dehydrogenase activity. A number of indirect lines of evidence have indicated that the mutation responsible for this loss in enzyme activity is locoalized in the Adh structural gene. We present more direct evidence for this hypothesis here. Utilizing a newly developed procedure for comparing tryptic peptides of Drosophila alcohol dehydrogenase obtained from different strains, we show that the alcohol dehydrogenase-like protein isolated from Adh nll exhibits an altered peptide profile when compared to that of wild type. The implications of this finding as well as the utility of the method for attacking other genetic and developmental problems are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die potentiometrische Thoriumbestimmung als Oxalat liefert Werte mit konstantem Fehler und kann daher mit entsprechender Korrektur zur Analyse verwendet werden.
Notes: Summary The potentiometric determination of thorium as oxalate yields values with a constant error and therefore can be employed for analysis with a suitable correction.

Notes: Abstract Solvent extraction studies have been made on some metals: In/III/-Tl/III/ and Hg/II/-Cd/II/-Co/II/, from ammonium thiocyanate solutions by dialkyl sulphoxides. Separation of these metals from one another can be achieved by suitable choice of the extracted conditions. The nature of the extractable metal species has been elucidated.

Notes: Abstract Populations of Pistia stratiotes L., a pleustonic macrophyte, have been surveyed in two ponds of different hydrochemical nature. Based on the rosette form, two biotypes were distinguished. They are provisionally designated as ‘Compact’ and ‘loose’ varieties. They occur as sympatric populations in the ponds. A comparison of the diameter of the rosette, root length, 5th leaf length & breadth and length & number of inflorescences, followed by tests of significance, confirm their distinctiveness. In vegetative propagation, they propagate true. The comparison of the biotypes is extended to biomass, productivity allocation, pH of the cell saps, chlorophyll, nucleic acids, total free amino acid (TNPS) content of the leaves and total nitrogen, crude protein and phosphorous in whole plants.

Notes: Abstract Meiotic behaviour of hybrids between Coffea dewevrei var. ‘excelsa’ and C. eugenioides, and between C. liberica and C. eugenioides, and of open pollinated progeny of these hybrids reveals a close genome relationship in spite of striking morphological differences and distinct geographic separation. In the cross C. dewevrei ‘excelsa’ X C. eugenioides several maternal types occurred, attributed to parthenogenesis. The hybrids are self-sterile and set few seeds on open pollination, again partly involving parthenogenesis, and participation of some unreduced gametes in hybridization. Subdivision of the section Eucoffea into different subsections (C. dewevrei and C. liberica belonging to subsection Pachycoffea, C. eugenioides to Erythrocoffea) has no cytological basis.

Notes: An explicit algorithm which gives stable finite-difference schemes, of order of accuracy greater than two, for solving a quasi-linear hyperbolic system of partial differential equations in several space dimensions is presented. Third and fourth order accuracy schemes are derived using this algorithm. The fourth order scheme needs fewer flux evaluations than the scheme given by Abarbanel and Gottlieb.1 Numerical results obtained show that these schemes have the expected accuracy and stability.

Notes: The kinetics of thermal polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by manganese(III) in sulfuric acid is studied in the temperature range between 40 and 607deg;C. The rate of monomer consumption is found to be dependent on [MMA]2, [H+]-1 but independent of [Mn3+]. The rate of manganic ion consumption is directly proportional to [MMA], [Mn3+] and inversely proportional to [H+]. The chain length is directly proportional to [MMA] and inversely proportional to [Mn3+] and [H+]. A plausible reaction mechanism with initiation by Mn3+ OH- species and termination by the interaction of Mn3+ with the polymer radical is proposed.
