Abstract Tunnelling and rectification characteristics of MIM point contact diodes are interpreted in terms of the different electronic band structures of the two metals at the junction. The experimentally observed polarity reversal is shown to be consistent with the tunnelling mechanism describing the operation of the MIM diode.
