Notes: Two unusual sulphur-containing amino acids have been isolated from urine of a baby who died with major physical malformations and failure of growth and development. Sensitive mass spectrometric methods were used to identify the nanomole quantities of the compounds available as S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteine and S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteamine. Incubation of fibroblasts in either [14C]valine or [35S]cysteine resulted in radioactive labelling of the compounds, suggesting their origin from conjugation of methacrylic acid with cysteine and subsequent decarboxylation of the cysteine conjugate. Specific assay of methacrylyl-CoA hydratase is needed for final proof that this is a new inborn error of that enzyme, but these findings and parental consanguinity make this very likely. It seems possible that methacrylic acid or one of its derivatives may have caused the malformations present in the baby.

Notes: A series of bruceolides isolated from Brucea javanica has been studied by electron impact, chemical ionization and field desorption mass spectrometry, and by metastable ion techniques, including mass analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry. The spectral data obtained for one of these compounds, bruceine A, are discussed in relation to the molecular structure and are taken as an example for the bruceolide series. The bruceolides occur in plants as mixtures of closely related compounds and some of them have potent anti-cancer activity. It is demonstrated that mass spectrometry provides a valuable tool for the identification and characterization of these compounds.

Notes: 13C T1ρ values measured for N,N-dimethylpiperidinium iodide yield activation parameters (ΔH≠ and ΔG270≠ values of 43.7 and 41.6 kJ mol-1) for the chair-chair interconversion in aqueous solution similar to those measured for 1,1-dimethylcyclohexane. The potential of 13C T1ρ values for studying dynamic processes in aqueous solutions is illustrated.

Notes: The 13C NMR spectra of five thieno[2,3-b][1,5]benzodiazepines and two related benzodiazepinones have been recorded at 22.64 MHz using broad band and off-resonance proton decoupling techniques. Spectral interpretation is facilitated by the presence of one (or more) fluorine substituents in the benzo-ring.

Notes: The 13C NMR spectra of four pairs of 1,3,4-thiadiazole/thiadiazoline isomers have been recorded using broad band and off-resonance proton decoupling techniques and in the coupled mode. Differences in the chemical shifts of the heterocyclic ring and the carbonyl carbons allow identification of the isomer present. Their IR and UV spectra are in agreement with literature reports for azole/azoline analogues.

Notes: The loss of a hydroxyl radical from the molecular ions of o-, m- and p-ethylnitrobenzene has been studied by metastable ion and collisional activation techniques using electron impact and field ionization. It is shown that for the ortho isomer the mechanism of this reaction is unique, and is totally different from that of the meta and para isomers. The critical energies are also reported, and deuterium labelling is employed to access the role of the α-hydrogens in hydroxyl loss.

Notes: Raman spectra and phonon pressure dependencies are reported for the spinel-related iodides A2HgI4, (A = Ag, Cu, Tl and 1/2Pb) at high pressures in a diamond anvil cell. In each case the upper pressure limit of observation was set by changes in band gap which caused darkening and photodecomposition. New phase transitions were found for Cu2HgI4 (8 and 25 kbar), Tl2HgI4 (11.5 kbar) and PbHgI4 (7 and 14 kbar). Transitions in Ag2HgI4 were located at 3.3, 5.9 and 8.1 kbar, confirming and extending earlier evidence. The β-Ag2HgI4 to phase II transition at 3.3 kbar appears to be second-order in type. Using Landau's theory, Ag2HgI4 II was shown to adopt space group C23. Similarly, at the I/II transition in Cu2HgI4, the new phase (II) can have either D28 or C2ν18 symmetry.
