Notes: This paper is concerned with an interpretation of the Bouguer anomaly on the Western flank of the Brabant Massif (Belgium). The position, shape, and density contrast of elementary bodies in the upper part of the earth's crust are determined in a purely numerical manner. A batholith-like body and a basin-type structure both adequately account for the observed surface field, at least from a one-sided geophysical and mathematical point of view. Since seismological control is lacking the two models are representative of the ambiguity and indeterminacy of the definitions of the geologic cause of the anomalous features, if the data are restricted to gravity information alone.

Notes: Summary Following intravenous injection of pyruvic acid (PA) in the form of the sodium salt in the normal rabbit the level of PA in the blood rises, falling again to the initial level after 60 minutes. In the case of the alloxandiabetic animal the elimination of PA administered in equal doses is markedly retarded. If animals are used that suffer from a progredient alloxan diabetes leading to death in coma, an increased endogenous hyperpyruviæmia can be demonstrated. Insulin plays no part in the regulation of PA metabolism; through the application of aneurin, however, one succeeds in enabling the organism to make use of PA. A separate report will deal with the complex relations holding in endogenous hyperpyruviæmia in coma.

Notes: Summary In the end-stage of progressive alloxan diabetes of the rabbit we have been able to overcome the acute pyruvic acidosis by the use of phosphorylated vitamin B1 (cocarboxylase) together with vitamin B2, while it is impossible to cure the endogen hyperpyruviæmia with simple vitamin B1. The superiority of the coferment over the vitamin, which is only effective at the beginning of the decompensation, implies the existence of a disturbance in the phosphorylation during the crisis of diabetic metabolism. We have been successful in preventing the inevitable death in coma of diabetic rabbits by doses of cocarboxylase + riboflavin, and we were able to keep them alive by continuous doses of insulin together with vitamin B1 and B2.

Notes: Abstract The sunspot record for the time interval 1749–1977 can be represented conveniently by an harmonic model comprising a relatively large number of lines. Solar activity can otherwise be considered as a sequence of partly overlapping events, triggered periodically at intervals of the order of 11 years. Each individual cycle is approximated by a function of the Maxwell distribution type; the resulting impulse model consists of the superposition of the independent pulses. Application of these two models for the prediction of annual values of the Wolf sunspot numbers leads to controversial results. Mathematical modelling of the sunspot time series does not give an unambiguous result.

Notes: Summary Dose-response curves of the C-terminal octapeptide (CCK-8) of cholecystokinin, of 3 of its methoxinine analogues, and of caerulein for various variables of exocrine pancreatic secretion have been established in conscious dogs. The following relative potencies were calculated for the protein secretion activity of CCK-8 (100%), [Mox3]-CCK-8 (52%), [Mox6]-CCK-8 (27%), [Mox3,Mox6]-CCK-8 (19%) and caerulein (178%).

Notes: Summary In the isolated rabbit mesenteric artery, pretreated with phenoxybenzamine (10−5 M) and contracted with prostaglandin F2α (5×10−7–5×10−6 M) the relaxing effects of dopamine were analyzed. 1. Dopamine (10−6–3×10−4 M) produced a concentration-dependent relaxation of the contracted arterial strips. The β-adrenoceptor antagonist pindolol (10−7M) did not alter this relaxation, but did significantly antagonize relaxations caused by isoprenaline (10−9–10−5 M). 2. The dopamine-receptor antagonists metoclopramide (2.5×10−5–10−4 M) and droperidol (3×10−6–3×10−5 M), on the other hand, significantly suppressed dopamine-induced relaxations in a dose-dependent manner. The pA2-values of metoclopramide and droperidol were 5.18 and 6.05, respectively. Metoclopramide (2.5×10−5–10−4 M) and droperidol (3×10−6 and 10−5 M) did not inhibit relaxations evoked by isoprenaline; only in concentrations above 10−5 M droperidol showed a β-adrenolytic side effect. 3. Metoclopramide (5×10−5 and 10−4 M) and droperidol (10−5 and 3×10−5 M) had no effect on adenosine-or papaverine-induced relaxations; thus, unspecific effects of the antagonists can be excluded. 4. The anticholinergic agent atropine (10−6 M) and the antihistaminic agent metiamide (10−5 M) did not modify dopamine-induced relaxations indicating that cholinergic and histaminergic mechanisms are not involved in the action of dopamine. In addition, stimulation of presynaptic receptors and/or indirect effects of dopamine via the release of endogenous noradrenaline do not play any role in the relaxing effects of dopamine, since on arteries derived from rabbits pretreated with 6-hydroxydopamine (3×30 mg/kg i.v.) dopamine-induced relaxations were very similar to those obtained on arteries from untreated rabbits. 5. It is concluded that on the isolated rabbit mesenteric artery dopamine produces its relaxing effect through direct stimulation of vascular dopamine receptors. These effects can be antagonized by metoclopramide and droperidol. Thus, the present results support the view that dopamine receptors exits on vascular smooth muscle mediating vasodilation. 6. Studies on structure-activity relationships demonstrate that the 3,4-dihydroxy substitution at the benzene ring of the phenylethylamine molecule is essential for stimulation of the vascular dopamine receptor: Epinine, SK & F 38393 (2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenyl-1 H-3-benzazepine) and apomorphine, which contain this structure, were found to be active at the receptor. 3-(2-Dipropylamino-ethyl)phenol, lacking in the 4-OH-group, and 3-methoxytyramine, where the 3-OH-group is methylated, on the other hand, were found to be inactive.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The propagation of acoustic waves in a radiating multiple-phase system is investigated including relaxation effects. The balance equations are linearized for small perturbations of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The solutions for one-dimensional waves are discussed. The exact results are compared with approximation solutions and are applied to the calculation of disturbance pressure in a standing wave.

Notes: Abstract Small doses of caerulein (10, 20, 40, 100 ng/kg/h) were given to conscious dogs with chronic duodenal and gastric fistulas, and the exocrine pancreatic response was compared with that obtained by a testmeal. Maximal protein and bicarbonate secretion varied between 20 and more than 100 ng/kg/h, depending on the individual animal. Testmeal-stimulated pancreatic secretion was approximately equivalent to that achieved with 10 ng caerulein/kg/h. Plasma secretin levels did not change significantly during testmeal stimulation.
