Notes: Abstract The time domain Born approximation for ultrasonic scattering from volume flaws in an elastic medium is described. Results are given both for the direct and the inverse problem. The time domain picture leads to simple intuitive formulas, which we illustrate by means of several simple examples. Particular emphasis is given to the front surface echo and its use in reconstructing the properties of the flaw.

Notes: Summary A simple method for making detailed measurements of seedling root systems is described. Photocopies of root systems are traced over by an operator using a digitizing system attached to a microcomputer. The computer calculates and prints the lengths of axis, laterals and sublaterals for each root system. Accurate measurements can be achieved with a degree of speed and detail unobtainable by other methods.

Notes: Summary We critically evaluated the major techniques for measurement of intramyocardial pressure (IMP (closed, perfusion, open, microtransducer). Each technique demonstrates a gradient in systolic IMP increasing with depth from the epicardium. The estimated magnitude of this gradient varies with the technique employed. Indirect methods (closed, perfusion) estimate a higher value for the systolic IMP gradient. The open and microtransducer methods, which measure a direct hydrostatic pressure within the myocardium, are less invasive and reflect more reliably the magnitude of IMP. The results for the open and microtransducer methods were comparable and indicate that normalized systolic IMP increases linearly from the epicardium. In the inner half of the myocardium systolic IMP approaches the level of systolic LVP and in the subendocardial layer it exceeds the systolic LVP by about 8%. A reverse IMP gradient occurred in late diastole ranging from 5 mm Hg in the subendocardial region K 25 mm Hg in the subepicardium.

Notes: Abstract Problems of optimal choice generally invoke monotone preference functions; consequently, optimal strategies consider stopping the sequence only when extremal (best/worst) or nearly extremal candidates are presented. The objective of the present investigation is to select a candidate representative of the entire sequence. In particular, selection of the median object and selection of any object from a set of middle ranks are considered.

Notes: Abstract The use of probability-density-function analysis, an important topic in statistical analysis, is studied in this paper with respect to its utility in nondestructive testing. In addition to the mathematical concepts, several sample problems in composite-material inspection are presented. A feature map (or F-map) is introduced as a new procedure that gives us a new way to examine composite materials. A probability-density function is basically a plot of number of times a particular value per unit value occurs vs. the value itself. A feature is defined as a parameter measured or calculated from an ultrasonic waveform. Some examples are center frequency, rise time, pulse duration, attenuation at frequencyf, and so forth. Probability-density curves are estimated for each of the features derived from a waveform. These curves are then used to assist in the production of F-maps. Sample problems in graphite-polyimide structures and boron-aluminum materials using these curves and F-maps are given. An inspectability parameter based on feature probability-density-function analysis is introduced for a compositematerial fabrication process that makes damage detection more reliable. F-maps are then used to determine the extent of damage.
