Notes: Abstract: A sensitive radioisotopic assay has been used to examine the kinetic properties and regulation of biosynthesis of glutamine synthetase in C-6 glioma cultures. The Km values for glutamate, MgATP, and ammonium ion were 5mM, 14 mM, and 0.042 mM, respectively, when measured at the pH optimum of 7.2. There was an absolute requirement for a divalent metal ion, with 15 mM- Mg2+ being the preferred ion at pH 7.2. Activity was completely inhibited after 30 min with 8 mM-L-methionhe sulfoximine. The addition of 1 μM-cortisol to C-6 cultures caused a two to threefold increase in glutamine synthetase specific activity over a 96-h period, while dexamethasone at the same concentration elevated the level some 7-10-fold. This was specific for glucocorticoids, as other steroid hormones or catecholamines did not significantly affect glutamine synthetase specific activity. Cycloheximide (30 μM) or actinomycin D (0.01 μg/ml) blocked the hormone response. The continued presence of hormone was required in order to maintain an elevated enzyme level. The results suggest that glucocorticoids act to induce glutamine synthetase by stimulating new enzyme synthesis.

Notes: The least attentive Hellenist must have noticed that the Greek tongue contains a number of pairs of nouns of identical or nearly related meaning—one in the masculine, the other in the feminine. The subject attracted the notice of Lobeck, Pathoiogia, pp. 7 sq., Technologia, pp. 267 sq.; G. Meyer in Curtius' Studien V., p. 68; Stein in the introduction to his Herodotus, p. lx (on the variations in the MSS.); and the resultant list will be found in Kuhner-Blass I., pp. 501, 502. It is not complete (I can add one pearl of great price: ⋯ ⋯ν⋯μη from the Apophthegmata patrum, Migne, LXV. 261 B; and ⋯ν π⋯λψ E 397 was taken by Aristarchus to mean εν πύλῃ, and this may be the origin of the three πύλοι), and the question deserves investigation. The only doctrine that can be called such appears to be the remark in schol. BT on Σ 551 (which did not escape Lobeck), δρεπανας] Iωνɩκως, οủτοɩ ϒαρ τρεπουσɩ πάντα είς τ⋯φρη, ταϕρη αστραϒαλη.

Notes: Abstract In a previous article describing the anteroposterior angled caudad view the authors described a technique to more clearly evaluate the posterior elements of the lumbosacral spine, especially the articular facets, using standard radiographic techniques. This article details the specific pathology which can be evaluated. Multiple cases and examples of the view are given and comments regarding calcifications of the capsule of the articular facets and findings in trauma and post-surgical changes are described.

Notes: Summary A comprehensive method of evaluating the feet of patients with adolescent hallux valgus both before and after surgical correction is described. Serial clinical, photographic and radiological studies were made and a dynamic assessment of gait was carried out using a load-sensitive walkway. Observations were made on 36 feet in which hallux valgus was treated by a modification of the Wilson oblique metatarsal osteotomy, with removal of a wedge of bone and screw fixation. In the first six months after operation, there was a lateral shift of the weight-bearing pattern in the forefoot and less weight was taken on the toes, but there was a tendency to return to the pre-operative distribution of weight during the next four years. Persistence of the lateral shift of weight-bearing appeared to result from elevation of the first metatarsal head secondary to shortening of the first metatarsal during the osteotomy. This can be avoided by deliberate depression of the first metatarsal head at the time of operation and fixation of the fragments in the required position with a screw.
