Notes: Summary The results of conventional bowel preparation (CP) with application of oral antibiotics (AB) are retrospectively compared with orthograde lavage (OL) without AB in curative colon resection (CR,n = 244) and rectal extirpation (n = 114) in cancer (1979–1981). Perioperatively all patients were given systemic antibiotics. With OL in 109 CR patients 12.8 % had wound infections (WI) and 5.5 % had anastomotic leakages (AL). After CP (n = 135) 14.1 % WI and 8.1 % AL took place. In rectal extirpation the WI rate was 18 % after OL (n = 50) and 20.3 % with CP (n = 64).
