Notes: Summary The lips of the ileocaecal valve are permanent folds parallel to the long axis of the small intestine, which are formed by invagination of all layers of the terminal ileum into the caecum. In the basal two-thirds they contain processes of all muscular layers of ileum and caecum, which form a system of muscle bundles that is connected with the tunica muscularis mucosae. The luminal part of the lips contains a venous plexus embedded in the loose connective tissue of the tela submucosa, which is connected with the venous plexus of the tunica mucosa. Arteriovenous anastomoses facilitate the rapid filling of these venous plexus. The ileocaecal valve in humans acts as a combined angiomuscular-angioplical lock-system that under normal conditions prohibits a caeco-ideal reflux.

Notes: Films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene, and a styrene/acrylic terpolymer have been cast from solutions of varying thermodynamic quality and the film properties studied by inverse gas chromatography and by critical surface tension measurements. Surface properties of the non-polar polystyrene were independent of solvent medium, but significant variations in these properties were observed in the case of PMMA and the terpolymer. Solvent balance also appeared to affect the bulk properties of the latter films, as judged by the penetration rates of interacting liquids. The observations indicate the feasibility of controlling film properties of the solid by the appropriate selection of solution media; a time-dependent variation in solid properties is to be expected, however, as the film structure attains an equilibrium state.

Notes: Inverse chromatography was applied to evaluate interaction parameters for polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and CaCO3, these parameters being based on retention volumes of proton-donor, -acceptor, and neutral vapors. The acid/base characteristics of CaCO3 were controllably altered by exposing the particulate to microwave plasmas sustained by acidic and basic vapors. It was shown that the ease-of-dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrixes related with the acid-base interaction balance in the polymer-filler pair, and varied widely with the surface treatment given to the filler. Mechanical properties at large deformation of the filled polymers and their durability also were shown to depend on surface interactions. Optimization of properties in PVC compounds was favored when strong acid-base interactions could take place with the plasma-modified filler. In the case of PE, properties were superior when unmodified filler was used; imparting strongly acidic or basic surface properties to the filler diminished its “compatibility” and usefulness with this nonpolar matrix.

Notes: Various microwave plasma treatments were applied to Kevlar in the form of multifilament fabric and single fiber. Plasma-modified fabrics were used to construct two-ply laminates using a triazine resin adhesive. Very significant increases in the bond strength of laminates may be attributed to the plasma treatments; the effectiveness of plasma treatment is best utilized by reducing to a minimum the time interval between plasma exposure and contact of treated substrate with impregnating (adhesive) fluid. Mechanical properties of single Kevlar fibers seem to deteriorate somewhat on plasma exposure, but the cohesive strength of multifilament cloth is enhanced by the same treatments.
