Summary The sampling of atmospheric polar organic compounds (amines, aldehydes, acids) generally requires the use of solid supports such as porous polymers. In most cases, resort to thermal desorption proves necessary. After reviewing the various possible adsorbents and the thermal desorption procedures decribed in the literature, this paper points out the possibilities and limitations of the technique, taking as a simple example toluene on activated acharcoal. A practical and reliable “Internal calibration” method is proposed.
