    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A new contrasting method for the direct observation of the microstructure of polyamides in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) was found. In the mixture of formaldehyde and osmium tetroxide (OsO4) in an aqueous solution the OsO4 is reduced by formaldehyde and reacts very selectively with the carbonamide groups without causing a reorganization of the structure of the polymer. As a result the density of the amorphous regions in the semicrystalline polyamides is increased. From ultrathin sections high contrasted micrographs can be obtained in the TEM.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Eine neue Kontrastierungsmethode erlaubt erstmals die direkte Beobachtung der kristallinen und amorphen Bereiche in Ultradünnschnitten aus Polyamiden im Transmissions-Elektronenmikroskop (TEM). Als Kontrastierungslösung wird ein Gemisch aus gleichen Teilen einer wäßrigen Lösung aus Formaldehyd und Osmiumtetroxid (OsO4) verwendet. Die MikroStruktur der Polymeren wird durch das Kontrastierungsverfahren nicht verändert.
