Notizen: Abstract The electrochemical characteristics of the Cu (II)/Cu (I) and the Cu (I)/Cu (0) couples at platinum, carbon, mercury and copper have been studied in acetonitrile-water (AN-H2O) mixtures. All the electrode processes are moderately fast with mercury the fastest but slower on platinum and carbon paste in that order. A slow chemical step precedes oxidation of Cu (I) to Cu (II) on allectrodes in solutions of high AN content. The slow step may be partial removal of AN from the solvated Cu (I) ion prior to electron transfer. Electrode processes are faster in chloride ions than in sulfate ion solutions. Reduction of Cu (I) in AN−H2O is quite slow on glassy carbon. Adsorption of AN on platinum and carbon influences the processes. Diffusion coefficients in sulfate solutions are in the order, Cu (I) (AN−H2O)〉Cu (II)(AN−H2O)〉Fe (III)(H2O) and 2-hydroxy-cyanoethane (2-HCE) strongly decreases the mobility of Cu (I) when added to H2O. The relevance of the measurements to hydrometallurgical processes is considered. CuSO4 in 30% v/v AN−H2O is a ‘faster’ oxidant than the common oxidant Fe2(SO4)3 in H2O because of the greater mobility and faster electron acceptance from a corroding surface of Cu (II). Only in solutions of very high nitrile content is the reduction potential of CuSO4 as high as that of Fe2(SO4)3 in H2O.

Notizen: Summary Triple test cross progenies resulting from the crossing of three testers (‘Kloka’, ‘UP 368’ and an f1 intermediate between them) and 24 varieties of bread wheat have been studied for plant height (cm), peduncle length (cm), ear length (cm), number of spikelets per spike and harvest index (ratio between economic and total yield). Epistasis was not significant for any of the characters studied. The testers were inadequate for plant height and for peduncle length although the testers varied considerably for these traits. Additive variance played a significant role in the inheritance of all the characters except number of spikelets per spike. The dominance variance was important for plant height, ear length and harvest index. The degree of dominance was in the over-dominance range for plant height. Complete dominance was operative for ear length, number of spikelets per spike and harvest index whereas for peduncle length only partial dominance was observed. The possibility of the isolation of the recombinants with high harvest index has been stressed.

Notizen: Summary Pot incubation study with fresh Azolla (Azolla pinnata-India and Vietnam isolates,A. mexicana andA. filiculoides), blue-green algaAulosira sp., green manureSesbania cannabina, Azolla compost, farm yard manure and ammonium sulphate was conducted under flooded condition at CRRI, Cuttack keeping an equivalent amount of 25 ppm N through all the amendments where changes in availability of N and P, C∶N ratio and pH were recorded. Application of chemical N-fertilizer recorded a release of about 87% NH4 +−N at 10th day of flooding which gradually decreased and reached the minimum of 6% at 50 days. The C∶N ratio of the organic manures ranged between 9–10 favouring release of NH4 +−N and among theAzolla speciesA. pinnata isolates released NH4 +−N more efficiently thanA. filiculoides andA. mexicana. A. pinnata Indian isolate released maximum of 88% NH4 +−N, whereas Vietnam isolate recorded 77% at 40 days of flooding; green manure on the other hand, reached a maximum of 50% release at 50 days. The blue-green alga recorded a gradual increase and attained the maximum release of 38% at 40 days of flooding. Farmyard manure recorded a highest NH4 +−N release of 69% at 20 days of flooding and gradual decrease thereafter, whereas Azolla compost released 41% at 40 days of flooding. Soil amended with fresh organic matter achieved reduction upto a pH of 7.2 after 50 days of flooding, whereas the pH in Azolla compost and farmyard manure amendment was 〈7. The P availability increased from 20th day onwards and reached the highest values of 26 and 18 ppm in the fresh organic matter and compost amended soil respectively after 40–50 days of flooding. The cumulative release of available P was found superior in fresh Azolla incorporation.
