    Notes: Abstract One hundred consecutive children with blunt esophageal foreign bodies were treated with a non-operative method of foreign body removal utilizing a Foley catheter. Dislodgement was successful in 98 children. There were no complications. Performed properly, the technique is rapid and safe. It precludes hospitalization and the slight hazards of endoscopy and general anesthesia.

    Notes: Abstract Major dimensions of ecological segregation of tree species in cool temperate Europe and E North America appear related to (a) soil pH, (b) large scale ‘succession’ including topographic sequences of changing moisture stress, and (c) intolerance versus tolerance of canopy competition as involved in ‘gap-phase’ dynamics. Genera tend to have similar average positions along these dimensions in the two subcontinents. E North American genera that were probably never present in Europe, and the few opposites, tend to be southern and are concentrated on dry or basic soil. The cause of this trend may involve the isolated expansions of dry climatic areas since the early Tertiary. E North American genera that became extinct in Europe after the mid-Pliocene are typical of habitat intermediate between dry-acid and moist-basic, though generally more moist-acid than dry-basic. These genera also have few species and little overall habitat width. Severe restrictions of their habitats may have occurred. Also, difficulties of migration to and from refugia are suggested by the generally heavier seed of extinet genera and those with strongly southern ranges in Europe or with few species compared to E North America. This relationship is apparent within small winged, medium fleshy and large nutty fruit classes. However, there is little difference in geographic restriction between these classes. Carpinus, Alnus, Corylus, Taxus, Pyrus and Sorbus reach 100–1000% greater height in Europe. There are no opposing differences of this magnitude. These trees may be ecological substitutes for extinct Liriodendron, Liquidambar, Carya, Tsuga + Thuja, Diospyros, and a group with smaller fleshy fruits, respectively. There are other intrageneric differences in height, seed weight, niche width, longevity, etc., that deserve further attention.

    Notes: A linear form of the mass balance equation is used to determine how turbulent transport of mass to a solid wall is related to the fluctuating velocity field. It is found that at high Schmidt numbers the Reynolds transport is controlled by fluctuations of much lower frequency than the most energetic velocity fluctuations. The characteristic of the velocity field that emerges as being most important is the small frequency limiting value of the spectral function of the velocity fluctuations normal to the wall. However, the linear theory that is explored does not predict the correct dependency of the average and the mean-squared deviation of the mass transfer coefficient on Schmidt number. A nonlinear analysis must be performed to examine fully the mechanism of turbulent mass transfer to a solid surface.

    Notes: The relation between the velocity and concentration fields for a fully developed turbulent flow which transfers mass to a pipe wall at large Schmidt numbers has been studied. Measurements of the fluctuations of the concentration gradient and the velocity gradient were obtained simultaneously at multiple locations on the wall. Spatial scales were calculated for the low frequency velocity fluctuations by passing the measured signals through low-pass filters. These scales are the same size as the scales of the concentration fluctuations. This result provides additional support for the notion that mass transfer to a boundary at high Schmidt numbers in controlled by low frequency velocity fluctuations which contain only a small fraction of the total turbulent energy.

    Notes: Mass transfer between a turbulent fluid and a solid boundary is considered for the case of large Schmidt numbers. The variation of the mass transfer coefficient with time, K(t), is calculated by solving the mass balance equation using a random velocity input. An interpretation of the mass transfer process which is radically different from that given by classical approaches is obtained.
