Notes: Polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ's) containing various amounts of crosslinkable pendant phenylethynyl groups were prepared from the reaction of 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminodiphenyl ether, 4,4′-oxydibenzil, and 4,4′-oxybis(4″-phenylethynylbenzil). The distribution of the pendant phenylethynyl groups along the polymer chain was varied in an attempt to alter the properties of the polymers. Preliminary film, adhesive, and laminate properties of PPQ void of pendant crosslinkable groups and containing pendant phenylethynyl groups were determined. The thermally induced reaction of the phenylethynyl group crosslinked the polymer which resulted in better dimensional stability at elevated temperatures.

Notes: A theory is developed for the rate of particulate deposition from turbulent gas streams onto surfaces. Three characteristic times - the particle relaxation time, the turbulent fluctuation time, and the particle residence time - control the deposition mode. Two phenomena are primarily responsible for transport of the particles across the laminar sublayer and deposition: (1) the momentum imparted to the particle by the fluid turbulence; and (2) the thermospheresis caused by the temperature gradient near the wall. Interaction of the three characteristic times with these two phenomena is analyzed, and the particle deposition rate in turbulent pipe flow is computed. The findings are found to be in close agreement with available experimental data.

Notes: Kinetics governing the nucleation and size variation of the slag droplets are first analyzed. Governing conservation equations are then formulated for the droplets and the surrounding gas-vapor mixture. These equations are solved numerically for the environments representing a typical flow through the channel and diffuser of a coal fired, MHD, power generation system. The average droplet size, total number density and the droplet size distribution are found to be rather strongly influenced by the total slag mass fraction and the supersaturation ratio.

Notes: A series of acetylene-terminated phenylquinoxaline (ATPQ) oligomers of various molecular weights were prepared and subsequently chain extended by the thermally induced reaction of the ethynyl groups. The processability and thermal properties of these oligomers and their cured resins were compared with that of a relatively high molecular weight linear polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) with the same chemical backbone. The ATPQ oligomers exhibited significantly better processability than the linear PPQ but, the PPQ displayed substantially better thermooxidative stability. Adhesive (Ti/Ti) and composite (graphite filament reinforcement) work was performed to evaluate the potential of these materials for structural applications. The PPQ exhibited better retention of adhesive and laminate properties than the ATPQ resins at 260°C after aging for 500 h at 260°C in circulating air.

Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of cure of resin-based restorative materials have been investigated by incorporating into commercial materials additional amounts of inhibitor, initiator, and accelerator. The polymerization was monitored by IR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and an oscillating rheometer. The rate of initiation of the polymerization was found to be first order with respect to the initiator and accelerator concentration. The inhibitor was found to be responsible for the induction period during which no polymerization occurred. The duration of this period was proportional to the inhibitor concentration. It was also found that the efficiency of the inhibitor affected the difference between the initial and final set times so that with one particularly effective inhibitor a “snap-set” behavior could be obtained.

Notes: Diphenylborinic acid is shown to react with a variety of polyfunctional molecules of biological interest to give products which are easily identifiable by mass spectrometry. The diphenylborinate adducts of amino acids possess extraordinary stability and are separable by reverse phase chromatography. The stability of products is discussed with regard to the nature and stereochemical arrangement of the functional groups involved in complex formation.

Notes: The 13C NMR spectra of 18 guaianolides have been measured and the chemical shifts assigned. The compounds investigated include the naturally occurring eremanthin (1), dehydrocostus lactone, eregoyazin, eregoyazidin and other semisynthetic lactones derived from 1. Qualitative analysis of the data suggests that the predominant conformation in almost all compounds so far studied is a distorted chair-like form.
