Notes: Attempts have been made to understand the curing reactions in carboxy-terminated polybutadiene (CTPB), which happens to be the most practical binder in advanced solid composite propellants. The curing of CTPB has been studied for different ratios of curing agents (MAPO and Epoxide) by gel content, molecular weight, crosslink density, and penetration temperature measurements, and the optimum composition of curators for effective curing of CTPB has been determined. Activation energy calculations on the curing of CTPB with 9.5% epoxide and 0.5% MAPO in the temperature range 75-100°C gave 14.1 kcal/mol for which a diffusion-controlled or acid-catalyzed epoxide ring opening mechanism has been suggested for the curing process in CTPB.

Notes: Owing to their low cost phosphorus fire-retardants find vast application in making fire-retardant cellulosic compostions. They have been used both as a physical additive as well as part of the polymer structure. Acid forming phosphorus compounds are generally effective in cotton and other cellulosic. Acidic retardants produce char via a dehydration process and this brings about the final fire-retardancy in phosphate-containing composition. High efficiency of phosphorus fire retardants in polyurethane foam has also been suggested to be the result of stable char formation. The char affects the flammability in the three following ways: reduction of flammable fuel, insulation by the char and coating by the non-volatile thermally stable phosphorous acids which screen the hot carbon from the oxygen. Nitrogen-phosphorus synergism in cellulose in controversial and evidence indicates that it is non existent in polymers.

Notes: Studies on the thermal oxidation of carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene in the presence of antioxidants have been carried out by dynamic DTA. Bis-thioacetylacetonato nickel(II) compounds are found to be effective in inhibiting the air oxidation reaction in the polymer. The crosslinking reaction of the polymer through the double bonds present in the polymer molecule is desensitized by the antioxidants and the effect is more with N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine. An exothermic peak formed at 270°C in the presence of tris(2-methylaziridinyl-1) phosphine oxide has been identified as the curing reaction. The infrared spectra of CTPB in the presence of MAPO at various temperatures confirm the various stages of reaction.

Notes: Thermal polymerization of acrylamide was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Latent heat of fusion ΔHf and enthalpy of polymerization ΔHp values were found to be 36 and -18.0 kcal mol-1, respectively. The overall activation energy E for the polymerization was calculated to be 19 k cal mol-1 up to 60% conversion. The added free-radical inhibitor (benzoquinone) was found to desensitize the thermal polymerization of acrylamide suggesting the polymerization to be a free-radical type. The existing rate equation for the heterogeneous bulk polymerization in the presence of initiators has been modified for the thermally initiated bulk polymerization of acrylamide. The experimental overall E value was found to agree well with the calculated E value when considering only the propagation and termination steps, thereby suggesting the process to be similar to postpolymerization of acrylamide.

Notes: The isothermal melting behavior of poly(L-lactic acid) spherulites has been studied in order to understand the mechanism of melting using hot-stage microscopy. When the periphery of the spherulite melts or shrinks, the central portion undergoes thickening as a result of which the melting or shrinking rate is not linear. Annealing studies at 448 K reveal that there is an increase in melting temperature and heat of fusion with annealing time, suggesting an increase in lamellar thickness. The high activation energy (828 kJ/mol) obtained in this investigation suggests the highly complex nature of the melting process wherein both melting and thickening occur.
