Notes: The side and corner flow rules for viscoplastic materials with singular yield surfaces are discussed and applied in numerical solution of several boundary-value problems. The differences in predictions of displacement and stress fields for different flow rules are demonstrated.

Notes: A finite element analysis of strain-softening materials is presented in which the shear band of prescribed thickness is assumed to exist within elements where maximal stress intensity is reached. The incremental stiffness matrix of the element is derived including shear band deformation. Examples presented in the Paper demonstrate that the load-displacement curve and the displacement field are not sensitive to the mesh size used in the solution.

Notes: A comparative discussion of constitutive rate equations generated by using the hypoelasticity and plasticity theories is presented. If is shown that these two approaches are equivalent for the loading process but differ essentially in defining the unloading (or reverse loading) paths. The multisurface plasticity formulation proves to be more convenient in incorporating memory rules of particular loading events, whereas loading-unloading criteria used in hypoelasticity may result in an unrealistic prediction of material response for some loading paths, and in particular, for cyclic loading. The violation of the continuity condition between loading-unloading domains in proposed constitutive relations3,4 limits their applicability to some particular classes of loading paths.

Notes: The combined isotropic-kinematic hardening rule for clays is presented using the concept of a multisurface model discussed previously in Reference 1. The mechanical behaviour of clays after one-dimensional consolidation is next simulated for the axisymmetric stress stress state. A general three-dimensional formulation of constitutive relations is also presented.

Notes: An anisotropic hardening model for sand or other granular materials is presented. The state of initial densification is represented by a configuration surface and the state of loading by a loading surface in the stress space. The domain of elastic response may not exist and the irreversible strain is assumed to occur for both active and reverse loading. The derived constitutive equations are applicable both for dense and loose sands. Some model predictions are compared with available experimental data for triaxial compression and extension under undrained condition.
