    Notes: Abstract A series of experiments on drained creep of marine sediment indicates that strength degradation results from the creep process, which implies an associated reduction in slope stability. Furthermore, the highest creep potential of a sediment may be at its preconsolidation stress. Results from the experiments on samples from Georges Bank continental slope were also used in conjunction with a preliminary theoretical model to predict creep displacements. For the case illustrated in this report, steep slopes (〉20°) and thick sections (〉30 m) give rise to substantial creep and probable creep rupture; as angles or thicknesses decrease, displacements rapidly become negligible. Creep may be a significant geologic process on many marine slopes. Not only can it cause major displacements of surface sediment, but it may also be the precursor to numerous slope failures.

    Notes: Summary The cortical distribution of the cells of origin of the dorsolateral and the ventral corticospinal tracts was studied in cat. This was done by making subtotal spinal transections, which in different experiments spared different portions of one ventral or one lateral funiculus at C5–C7. One week later horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections were made one segment caudal to the lesion and the cortical distribution of the HRP labeled neurons was studied. Thus, it was found that the dorsolateral corticospinal tract at C5–C7 is composed of crossed and uncrossed fibers in a ratio of about 10 ∶ 1, while the ventral corticospinal tract, which contains much fewer cortical fibers, is composed of crossed and uncrossed fibers in a ratio of approximately 1 ∶ 1. Further, the primary motor cortex (area 4) was found to contribute fibers to both the crossed and the uncrossed dorsolateral corticospinal tract as well as to both the crossed and the uncrossed ventral corticospinal tract. The primary somatosensory cortex (area 3a, 3b, 1–2, 5a, 5b) as well as the secondary somatosensory cortex (area 2 pre-insularis), on the other hand, were found to contribute fibers mainly to the crossed dorsolateral tract. Area 4 was found to display a further organization, such that it contains a medial and a lateral part, both of which contribute mainly fibers to the crossed dorsolateral tract, while the remainder of area 4 contributes fibers to the crossed and uncrossed dorsolateral as well as to the crossed and uncrossed ventral tracts.

    Notes: Abstract The cultural bacterial strains of two sediment samples, i.e., 260 strains, were submitted to numerical taxonomy to determine “ecological profiles.” From these profiles several calculations of bacterial diversity were done with increasing number of strains (between 10 and 130). Studying 20–30 strains was sufficient to obtain a diversity of bacterial community. Number of tests could be reduced from 62 to 30 without any influence on bacterial diversity. Similarity between studied tests was shown by using numerical taxonomy.

    Notes: Summary A soluble, cytochrome P-450-dependent fatty acid hydroxylase-epoxidase complex from Bacillus megaterium ATCC 14581 can be induced more than 100-fold by the addition of phenobarbital or one of its analogs (hexobarbital) to the growth medium. These barbiturate inducers are apparently not substrates for the enzyme nor do they activate the monooxygenase in the cell-free system. The induction efficiency of both phenobarbital and hexobarbital can be significantly increased with respect to monooxygenase activity by autoclaving the inducer in the growth medium rather than by adding it to the medium after autoclaving. Turnover numbers of about 3 000 nmoles of substrate oxygenated per min per nmole of P-450 were obtained in crude cell-free preparations obtained from maximally induced cultures. Our data indicate that products formed by heating phenobarbital or hexobarbital in the growth medium are significantly better inducers of monooxygenase activity than are the unaltered drugs.
