Notizen: In a family with perceptive, non-progressive hearing loss several of the members suffered from atopic dermatitis. The proband had a severe atopic dermatitis and an extremely high IgE value. Some of the family members suffered from atopic dermatitis, others from deafness, and some from both diseases. The co-existence of these two disorders has been previously described in two families. Atopic dermatitis and perceptive, non-progressive congenital deafness might be genetically associated.

Notizen: A total of 132 patch tested patients reacted with petechial reactions to cobalt chloride 1 % in petrolatum; 23 were retested with various concentrations of cobalt. In about 60% of those retested the petechial reaction could be reproduced. Histopathological examination showed slight perivascular tymphocytic infiltration, swollen endothelium and extravasation of erythrocytes but no signs of vasculitis. It is suggested that in predisposed patients the petechial reaction following patch testing could be the result of primary irritation.

Notizen: Lymphocyte function and lymphocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood have been studied in a population-based material of 47 twins with atopic dermatitis (AD) (31 with a history of AD, 10 with mild AD, and 6 with moderate AD) and in 47 age- and sex-matched non-atopic control twins. Lymphocyte transformations to phytohaemagglutinin, concanava-lin A (Con A), pokeweed mitogen, and purified protein derivative of tuberculin were investigated. Lymphocyte subpopulations were charaterzied by EAET rosettes and the monoclonal antibodies OKT3, OKT4, and OKT8. None of these in vitro tests showed any statistically significant differences between patients and controls. In the rather few individuals with moderate AD there was a statistically insignificant tendency to a decreased Con A stimulation in suboptimal concentration and a reduction of the OKT 8+ cells. However, there were definitely no alterations in the immunological variables between patients with a history of AD and controls. Our results indicate that the investigated variables could be related to disease activity. We suggest that they represent epiphenomena rather than pathogenetic mechanisms of importance for the development of AD.

Notizen: A case of chrysiasis was studied by light and electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis, and neutron activation analysis. The microscopic examination showed gold deposits in the perivascular areas in macrophages, and by electron microscopy studies gold was found exclusively in the phagolysosomes (aurosomes) indifferent ultrastructural patterns. The X-ray microanalysis confirmed that the phagolysosome contained gold. The concentration in light-exposed skin was 750–770 p.p.m. measured by the neutron activation analysis.

Notizen: The aim of the study was to investigate whether topical application of a beta-2-adre-nostimulant (fenoterol) on the mucous membrane has a clinically signification anti-allergic effect. Thirty-three patients with grass pollen hay fever completed the trial which was a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design. After a run-in period the patients received two puffs of 50 Hg fenoterol 4 times a day or placebo for 21/2 weeks before crossover. Symptoms were scored on diary cards and there was a moderate, but significant effect of fenoterol on sneezing but the effect on secretion and blockage was insignificant it is concluded that beta-2-stimulating agents are not competitors to the very effective topical steroids
