Description / Table of Contents: Investigations towards understanding of the atmospheric corrosion processes of pure ironIn an investigation of the atmospheric corrosion of pure iron the metal loss of a foil was determined by magnetic measurements and the oxygen consumption gasvolumetrically. The results showed that in the period immediately following short wetting iron dissolution takes place with reduction of the rust layer. The corrosion current density thereby reaches a value of 500 m̈A/cm2 temporarily falling rapidly with time. Apart from this the corrosion under conditions of critical humidity of the metal surface during the drying-out of the corrosion system plays a dominant role. The corrosion current density reaches here values up to 1 mA/cm2.
