Notizen: Summary Pinus radiata is spreading from plantations into some types of native eucalypt forest. A broad transect through one heavily invaded site was mapped in 1974 and re-examined after intervals of time. In 1977 the adjacent pine plantation was clear-felled for commercial purposes. By 1981 it was clear that the pines that had already invaded the eucalypt forest were contributing their own progeny to the mixed stand. However, the rate of recruitment is slow due to high seedling mortality. Comparative measurements have shown that during the period 1974–1981 the growth rate of pines established among the eucalypts was approximately ten times greater than that of the native trees.

Notizen: [Auszug] Isolates of rye stem rust, wheat stem rust and their putative hybrids were collected in the same geographical region on Secale cereale, Triticum aestivum and A. scabrum (a mutual host for all three types) respectively. Putative hybrids were identified by their virulence characteristics on selected ...

Notizen: Summary Disese induced by Albugo candida or Peronospora parasitica was found to have significant effects on the survival and reproductive output of affected individuals of Capsella bursa-pastoris. The time of infection by either pathogen was of considerable importance in determining the ultimate effect of disease. Systemic (primary) infection of seedling plants led to a high degree of mortality (88%) prior to reproductive maturity, however, localized or systemic secondary infection did not affect survival. Fruit production of surviving infected plants was negatively correlated with disease severity.

Notizen: Abstract Plants of two genotypes of Chondrilla juncea (skeleton weed), one susceptible to and the other resistant to one isolate of the rust Puccinia chondrillina, were grown as pure and mixed populations both in the presence and absence of rust. Weights of individual plants were obtained at two harvests, one when the plants were rosettes and the other when flowering had begun. Distributions of plant weights of each genotype became progressively more positively skewed with time, with rust infection of plants of the susceptible genotype and with increasing competition between plants of both genotypes. The results show that genetic differences may be an important factor in determining which individuals become dominant or are suppressed in competing mixtures, and that differential disease pressure may alter dominance of individuals in plant populations.

Notizen: Summary Variation in the responses of a wide range of accessions of four native Australian species of Glycine (viz. G. canescens, G. clandestina, G. tabacina and G. tomentella) to infection by eight Australian isolates of Phakopsora pachyrhizi was analyzed. Differences in the infection type responses of the various wild Glycine species were sufficient to recognize six different virulence combinations amongst the eight pathogen isolates. A set of differential hosts useful in the identification of different races of the pathogen is presented to facilitate further examination of the virulence structure of the pathogen population.
