Notes: Abstract A crystalline mesophase state in which molecules show conformational mobility is discussed for cyclododecane and octamethyltetrasiloxane.13C and29Si solid state NMR spectra show changes of the resonance signals which can be explained by changes of the conformation. The transition temperatures in the NMR spectra are correlated with the thermal transitions detected by DSC. Comparisons with the solution spectra give evidence that in case of octamethyltetrasiloxane, the conformational mobility is determined mainly by the molecular packing in the crystal, while packing effects are neglegibly small for cyclododecane. The data are discussed with concern to the corresponding linear chain molecules, i. e. poly(ethylene) and poly(dimethylsiloxane).

Notes: It is evidenced that charge-transfer interaction of electron-donor and acceptor groups incorporated in polymer chains improves substantially the rheological properties, mainly by extending the rubber plateau to higher temperatures and lower frequencies, respectively. The effect is attributed to thermoreversible network formation and can be used to increase the stability of incompatible polymer blends at least from the viscoelastic point of view.

Description / Table of Contents: Approaches for the determination of the microconformation of polymers at a segmental level as well as of their macroconformation are discussed with the aid of relevant examples, in solution, in swollen gels and in the solvent free rubber elastic state. The influence of the primary structure of the macromolecules is clarified especially with respect to their configuration. Interrelations between conformation and mechanical properties are discussed taking into account especially influences on the energy part of the elasticity. Finally equations concerning the interrelation between conformation and the thermodynamic interaction parameters in the swollen state are discussed on systems containing one as well as two polymer components.

Notes: The preparation of defined one and two component networks by simultaneous copolymerization and crosslinking is described as well as the calculation of the crosslink density and the number of elastically active chains from copolymerization data. The two component networks built up in this manner consist of a polymer backbone formed by one polymer component, which is crosslinked by bridges of another polymer of varying length. Such networks in the swollen state, using water as solvent, can be treated within the framework of existing swelling and mechanical theories. The information derived from copolymerization data is compared critically with those derived from equilibrium swelling and deformation behaviour. In addition, NMR-spin-lattice relaxation data are discussed, which give some insight into the relative affinity of each polymer for the solvent. Finally an expression for the activity of the solvent in the network phase as result of swelling of a two component network is given. The crosslinked graft copolymers discussed in this paper consist of poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) as the backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) as the interconnecting bridge. Conclusions derived from the two component hydrogel studies should be relevant for non-hydrophilic two component networks too.
