Abstract The low-energy part of the tunneling characteristics of Nb-Zr/Al/Al2O3/In layers has been studied. Structures corresponding to the presence of bound states in the Al layer below the gap of the superconductor are found even in very thin films. Comparison between measured and calculated tunneling characteristics shows good agreement with Arnold's theory, except for the position of the bound state. This discrepancy is most probably a result of nonideal matching between the NbZr and Al films.
