Abstract The oblique rotator model with axisymmetric magnetic fields containing a toroidal component is adopted for the description of the magnetic variations observed in Ap stars. The toroidal component is taken as a non-linear function of the stream function of the poloidal component. A scheme is presented for the determination fromH e andH s observations of the parameters that describe the surface distribution of the magnetic field components. This schema is succesfully applied to the magnetic observations of HD 215441, and the existence of different magnetic field surface structures that reproduce equally well the observations has been found. The main characteristics of the different solutions are discussed.
