Summary Poly(4,4′-isopropylidenediphenylene-phosphorochlori-date) has been prepared by condensation of bisphenol A with phosphorous oxychloride in pyridine medium. This polymer was found to be infusible and at high temperature in air decomposes to phosphorous pentaoxide. Isothermal and non-isothermal decomposition of polystyrene and mixture of polystyrene with the said polymer were studied. The isothermal data fitted well to Avrami-Erofeev equation of nucleation and growth of decomposition sites as in inorganic compounds. It suggested that these sites are produced by the mechanism similar to heterogeneous catalytic reactions. The compensation curve supports the view.
