Abstract The nuclear spin system of polycrystalline copper wires was studied down to 50 nK using two nuclear demagnetization refrigerators in cascade, and showed no definite indication of a transition to an ordered state. However, the static susceptibility parallel to the wires was 30% smaller than the perpendicular susceptibility at zero field at the lowest temperatures. Careful measurements of the field dependence of the static susceptibility in the parallel direction showed no saturation at the lowest temperatures in small fields, in contrast to our previous observation in the perpendicular direction. The copper sample, which had no preferred orientation of crystals, thus had an orientation-dependent static susceptibility at the lowest temperatures.
