Notes: Painter and Jewel sweet potatoes baked at oven temperatures of 150, 180, 200, and 230°C were judged for sensory qualities and were evaluated for resistance to pressure (softness) and content of sugars. Roots baked at 200 and 230°C were scored significantly higher for sweetness, mouthfeel, moistness, overall flavor, and over all quality; contained a greater percentage of reducing sugars; and were measured as softer than roots baked at 150 and 180°C. Painter roots were scored significantly higher for sweetness, mouthfeel, moistness, overall flavor, and overall quality than the Jewel variety. Positive correlations were observed between the concentration of reducing sugars, the resistance to pressure, and the sensory evaluation; and negative correlations were noted between the moisture content and the subjective measurements.

Notes: Summary Monoclonal antibody to the rat mammary carcinoma Sp4 isolated from hybridoma supernatants and labelled with 125I showed preferential in vivo localization into subcutaneous growths of Sp4 compared with normal tissues and a range of other transplanted tumours. No specific localization was seen with 125I-labelled normal rat immunoglobulin. Adriamycin conjugated to monoclonal antibody significantly retarded Sp4 tumour growth at 1/25th of the effective dose of the free drug, and in some cases brought about total tumour regression. Normal rat immunoglobulin-adriamycin conjugates were relatively ineffective. These studies indicate that monoclonal antibody directed against tumour cell surface antigens may be highly effective for tumour targeting of therapeutic agents.

Notes: Summary Chronic excess of glucocorticoids results in cushing's syndrome in humans. A common cause of excess cortisol secretion is the presence of an adrenocorticotropin secreting pituitary tumor which stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce excess glucocorticoids. ACTH-secreting AtT-20 mouse pituitary cells transplanted subcutaneously in oestrogenized athymic nude mice form tumors rapidly. Six weeks after receiving the tumor transplants, the mice weighed 45% more than normal mice due to the increase in body fat. The tumor-bearing mice exhibit the familiar “buffalo hump” appearance due to the abnormal distribution of body fat. The adrenal glands of the tumor-bearing animals are enlarged due to hypertrophy of the zona fasciculata. The foamy looking fasciculata cells in normal mice were converted to dense, eosinophilic cells in the tumor-bearing mice. Transplantation of normal pituitary glands to athymic nude mice with or without oestrogen treatment did not produce these morphological changes. The experimental model described here may be useful for future studies of Cushing's syndrome.

Notes: Abstract In a double-blind rossover study, single doses of d-amphetamine and placebo were administered to 12 patients with severe chronic obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Improvement of obsessional symptoms was significant on clinical ratings and was correlated with improved performance on an attention task. Changes were also significant for self-rated measures of activation and altered reality. The behavioral response to amphetamine was not statistically correlated with subsequent improvement during a 6-week clomipramine trial, although the direction of change was the same during both treatments for every patient studied.

Notes: Abstract S. Ulam asked about the number of non-isomorphic projective algebras withk generators. This paper answers his question for projective algebras of finite dimension at least three and shows that there are the maximum possible number, continuum many, of non-isomorphic one-generated structures of finite dimensionn, wheren is at least three, of the following kinds: projective set algebras, projective algebras, diagonal-free cylindric set algebras, diagonal-free cylindric algebras, and cylindric algebras.

Notes: Abstract There are exactly seven isomorphism types of infinite one-generated diagonal-free cylindric set algebras of dimension two all of which are described in this paper. Contrast this result with the following facts from another paper by the same author: there are continuum many two-generated such algebras and continuum many one-generated ones of finite dimension at least three.

Notes: Summary The origin of the inputs from the medullary swallowing centre (dorsal region including the nucleus of the solitary tract, or ventral region corresponding to the reticular formation surrounding the nucleus ambigous) to the pontine swallowing neurones (PSNs) was studied in sheep anaesthetized with halothane. Out of 101 PSNs located in the posterior part of the trigeminal (Vth) motor nucleus, 46 were activated by stimulating either the dorsal (21 neurones) or the ventral (25 neurones) region of the ipsilateral medullary swallowing centre, 3–4 mm rostral from the obex. Thirty-one neurones out of the 46 were identified as a motoneurones supplying swallowing muscles (mylohyoïd, anterior body of digastric and medial pterygoïd). Their average activation latency through stimulation of the dorsal medullary region was about 1 ms longer than through stimulation of the ventral region (3.63 ms±0.81 versus 2.72 ms±0.32). To determine the origin of the medullary input to the PSNs, we tried to activate the medullary swallowing neurones (MSNs) antidromically through stimulating the posterior part of the Vth motor nucleus, which contains the swallowing motoneurones. Seventy-three MSNs were tested (25 located in the dorsal and 48 in the ventral region). None of the dorsal neurones tested could be antidromically activated by pontine stimulation: 15 ventral neurones showed a clear antidromic response (collision test) with an average latency of 2.5 ms±0.73. These neurones, which send their axons into the pons, were all located in the reticular formation, above the nucleus ambiguus, 3–4 mm rostral from the obex. These results suggest that MSNs in the ventral reticular formation connect the medullary swallowing centre to the Vth motor nucleus. They also suggest that during swallowing, inputs originating from the dorsal region of the medullary centre (interneurones programming the motor sequence) are relayed in the ventral region (reticular formation adjacent to the nucleus ambiguus) before reaching the PSNs.
