Notes: Abstract: Two distinct classes of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster are reported: a soluble species that shows heterogeneity of forms and a particulate species. The subunit composition of the particulate enzyme was studied using the active site label [3H]diisopropylfIuorophosphate. Comparison of the electrophoretic patterns on nondenaturing gels using the activity stain and the active site label shows that the label is specific to AChE. The smallest active site-containing subunit of the enzyme is a monomer of —60,000 daltons MW. Two such units are linked by disulphide bonds to produce a dimer of about 110,000 daltons. Another monomeric form of MW —64,000 daltons, although present, does not participate in the dimerisation. The particulate enzyme when solubilised exists as a 9–10S species as determined by sucrose gradient centrifugation. This species has a MW 〉 200,000, as shown by its behaviour on a coarse-bead Sephadex-G200 column. Electrophoretic analysis suggests a MW of nearly 250,000 daltons for this form. Thus, this species is likely to be a tetramer. One possibility is that this tetramer is made up of two units of 64,000 daltons each and a dimer of 110,000 daltons. Preliminary data on mutant enzymes that support such a possibility are also presented.

Notes: An algorithm for the Theis solution of pumping test data has been developed taking into account the basic principles of graphical approach of curve-matching. The method is simple and does not need initial approximation of transmissivity and storativity as required by approaches suggested by Saleem (1970) and McElwee (1980). As a measure of error of fitting, integral square error is computed between the observed drawdown and drawdown calculated from the theoretical equation with the values of coefficients estimated by the procedure. Also root mean square deviation in drawdown is calculated. The algorithm is capable of identifying data with errors in observation or recording. The reliability of the algorithm and its limitations are discussed on the basis of test runs with synthetic data having varying magnitudes of error and varying distributions of error points in the data set. The estimates of parameters by the proposed algorithm for a typical field test data compare very well with the estimates by the sensitivity approach developed by McElwee (1980).

Notes: Abstract Ten spectrograms of T Vul at a dispersion of 8.47 Å mm−1 have been used for an analysis of the parameters of stellar atmosphere during its pulsation cycle. A differential curve of growth method relative to the Sun has been used to evaluate atmospheric parameters. The range in θexc is from 0.88 to 1.00. Mean abundances for twenty elements have been estimated relative to [N Fe]. A deficiency by a factor of 2.4 has been found ins-process elements with respect to those formed by thee-process.

Notes: Abstract The effective temperature of the short period cepheid SU Cas has been determined from a comparison of its spectral scans with appropriate model atmospheres. Using this temperature and an independent Wesselink radius determination, the luminosity of the star has been redetermined. The pulsation mass and the evolutionary mass of the star have been discussed. The evolutionary to pulsation mass ratio comes out to be greater than unity.

Notes: Abstract The levels of 144Ce, 137Cs, 125Sb, and 90Sr in the open waters of the Great Lakes were measured over the period 1973–81. The levels were found to be very low. 144Ce was detected only up to 1975 after which it dropped below the detection limit. The data indicate that the concentrations of the remaining three radionuclides have decreased with time. 90Sr and 137Cs provide essentially all of the radiological dose from drinking Great Lakes water. The dose equivalant commitments have been calculated from these measurements and found to be well within the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement's water quality objective for radioactivity.

Notes: Summary A slender two-dimensional wedge-wing moving at a high Mach number is subjected to an angle of attack changing exponentially with time. The obtained results give the time history of wall shear, heat transfer, displacement thickness, and viscous induced pressure. The unsteady character of the flow appears to be confined to the initial stages of the change in the angle of attack.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of226Ra, As, and NO 3 − have been measured in Lake Ontario waters off Eldorado Nuclear Limited's Port Granby radioactive waste management site. Only one sample gave a226Ra value higher than the Ontario criterion for public surface water supplies. The highest levels of As and NO 3 − were below the Ontario criteria. The leachate plume appears to move parallel to the shoreline in the direction of the prevailing wind but disperses rapidly reaching ambient levels within 150 m of the source. The leaching of these pollutants has only a minor effect on the lake water quality.

Notes: Synthesis of polyurea by interface polymerization of diisocyanate and diamine for preparation of polymer membrane for use in separation problems was investigated. A sulfuric-acid-based casting formulation was developed for the polymer prepared from 1,6-hexamethylene diamine and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate. The resulting membrane is porous and highly permeable to water. However, salt rejection was found to be 〈20%, while high molecular weight solutes like milk, papain, and Na-alginate were found to be rejected 100%. The membrane is more like a sieve structure with the absence of an asymmetric layer. It is found to be resistant to many organic solvents, thus making it suitable for use in ultrafiltration applications.
