Notes: Abstract The influence of the contained wall on the drag of a sphere moving through a non-Newtonian fluid is analysed in this work separately for the low Reynolds number and the high Reynolds number regions. In the former, we make use of the two-concentric-sphere model. It is predicted that the wall effect will decrease with the increase of the shear-thinning anomaly and this is in a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data and correlations. The wall effect in the high Reynolds number region is analysed in this work using the cell model (used to study the motion of an assemblage of solid spheres) and the predictions are in satisfactory agreement with the available empirical correlation for non-Newtonian fluids.

Notes: Abstract A new theoretical expression for tubulent mass transfer from a rotating cylinder has been proposed using Levich's three-zone model. The predictions of this model, which has no adjustable parameters, were compared with available experimental data and with other correlations for Newtonian fluids and the agreement was found very satisfactory. Equally good agreement was found between the predictions of our model and the available data for mass transfer from a rotating cylinder under the conditions of maximum drag reduction.

Notes: Summary A model has been developed for the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid past a porous sphere. The drag force exerted on a porous sphere moving in a power-law fluid is obtained by an approximate solution of equations of motion in the creeping flow regime. It is predicted that the effect of the pseudoplastic anomaly on the drag force is more pronounced at large porosity parameters.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of theβ-ray half-life,γ-ray and X-ray spectra andγ-ray half-lives have been done with a plastic scintillation detector, a high resolution Ge(HP) detector and a 142 cm3 Ge(Li) detector to search for an isomeric state in94Rb. Mass-separated activities of94Rb were obtained from the He-jet type on-line mass-separator at the Kyoto University reactor. No isomeric transition was found in theγ-ray and X-ray measurements with the upper limits of 3×10−4 and 8×10−5, respectively, as compared with the 836.9 keV transition. Half-lives obtained from theγ-ray decay measurements are discussed in the light of classification given byQ β -value measurements.
