    Notes: Several different variational formulations of boundary-value problems with constraints are discussed, with particular reference to constrained problems in elasticity. Special attention is given to exterior penalty methods. A discussion of the conditions necessary for penalty methods to provide a basis for stable and convergent finite element methods is given. In particular, the use of reduced integration is discussed and criteria on the order of reduced integration rules sufficient to produce stable and convergent schemes are described. Applications of reduced integration-penalty methods to incompressible elasticity problems and contact problems are described.

    Notes: Abstract Continuous ventilatory volume monitoring for a long period is indispensable to the treatment and nursing of critically ill patients, so that the non-invasive electrical impedance method was considered to see if it could take the place of a conventional method, such as pneumotachography. This report is composed of the following parts: (a) basic studies concerned with several factors which influence the accuracy, stability and reproducibility of the method, (b) development of impedance ventilatory volume monitor based on above mentioned basic studies and (c) clinical results obtained with the newly developed monitor. The monitor can measure tidal volume, breath by breath, continuously within about plus and minus 10% accuracy. It memorises a calibrated correlation curve for the conversion of impedance changes into tidal volumes by a microprocessor. As long as no abnormal physiological event occurs in the thoracic space, this accuracy is maintainable with calibrations only once or twice per day.

    Notes: Abstract Although information concerned with ventilatory dynamics is indispensable, especially with regard to the care of a critically ill patient, the data available is often very limited, because the currently used methods of ascertaining data are invasive and not tolerable for patients who are still conscious and neither intubated nor tracheotomised. From this viewpoint, a respiratory function monitoring system was developed, using a non-invasive ventilatory volume monitor based on the electrical impedance method as a key component. The system is composed of two ventilatory volume monitors connected to two patients and a central monitor. The central monitor acquires online data transmitted from ventilatory volume monitors and stores then in floppy-disc memory together with off-line data, such as blood gases, blood chemistry and urine volume. These data may be retrieved and displayed on a visual display unit in the form of tables, trend graphs or specially designed graphs. Hard copies can be made on demand. According to the accumulated results obtained from respiratory failure patients, it is now clear that the introduction of the system into medical practice would facilitate more accurate analysis of respiratory and circulatory pathophysiology for the type of patient mentioned. Furthermore, the physical responses to various respiratory and circulatory treatments can be obtained in more detail and the course of these patients' illness can be reviewed more systematically.
