    Notes: Abstract: The effects of ammonium ions on the release of glutamic acid from the rat cerebral cortex were measured in vivo using cortical cups and a multiple ion detection technique. The neosynthesis of this amino acid from glucose was also studied in two experimental models of hepatic encephalopathy: (1) rats receiving large amounts of ammonium acetate (i.p.) and (2) rats with a surgically constructed portocaval anastomosis. Intraperitoneal administration of 8 mmol/kg of ammonium acetate increased the cortical release of glutamic acid from 9.1.0.8 to 19.2 (nmol. cm−2. min−1). Moreover, 20 min after ammonium acetate administration the rate of incorporation of 13C2, originating from [13C]glucose, into glutamic acid increased by 65%. In several brain areas of rats bearing a portocaval anastomosis and fed ad libitum for 4 weeks, the content of glutamic acid slightly increased and the rate of formation of [13C2]glutamate from [13C]glucose approximately doubled. These results indicate that ammonium ions increase the release and the formation of glutamic acid in the brain. The resulting increased concentration of this amino acid in the extracellular spaces may be one of the mechanisms of ammonia toxicity in vivo.

    Notes: Summary The effect of the diisobutyric ester of N-methyldopamine (Ibopamine) on plasma prolactin levels was investigated in normoprolactinaemic subjects and in hyperprolactinaemic patients with prolactin-secreting tumours or idiopathic hyperprolactinaemia. In hyperprolactinaemic states oral Ibopamine 50 mg induced a significant decrease in elevated plasma prolactin (PRL) levels, 30, 60 and 90 min after administration. The peak effect occurred at 90 min when the mean PRL level was 61% of its basal values.

    Notes: Abstract Sulfur isotope analyses were made on 14 alunites from volcanic and sedimentary rocks widely different in chemistry and age from southern Tuscany and northern Latium, central Italy. The δ34S values range from +0.7 to +9.6‰, and appear not to be related to the nature of the host rock. Geological and isotopic evidence suggests that all the alunites formed by supergenic oxidation of sulfides. Sulfides occurring with alunites in the volcanic rocks of Latium can be divided into an isotopically light group of probably magmatic origin (δ34S=−1.5 to +3.4‰) and a heavy one with δ34S=+6.0 to +10.3‰, tentatively interpreted as deposited by hydrothermal fluids that leached sulfides of similar 34S/32S from the deep basement. Such an interpretation is consistent with recent studies indicating that in the perityrrhenian belt of Latium exists a continuation, at depth, of the Tuscan stratigraphic series, rich in sulfides with δ34 from +6 to +12‰.
