    Notes: Several neat and reinforced epoxy resin formulations were prepared and investigated. Solid glass microspheres, with and without coupling agent, were used as reinforcement. After completion of post-cure all samples were quenched into an ice-water bath. Upon removal from the ice-water bath, dynamic mechanical and fracture properties of all samples were evaluated as a function of time elapsed after quenching. Electron microscopic evidence was obtained for the existence of nodular morphology in all cured systems. The changes in dynamic mechanical and fracture parameters, induced by the sub-Tg annealing, were described in terms of the model of inhomogeneous thermoset morphology.

    Notes: Effects of pressure and temperature on time-dependent changes in physical/mechanical properties of graphite/epoxy composites were investigated. Samples were cut from the eight-ply-thick laminates of commercially used composites, post-cured, and then quenched to environments of various temperature and pressure. Time-dependent changes in their properties were analyzed by thermal and thermomechanical (dynamic mechanical) measurements. An increase in the glass-transition temperature was found to occur as a function of time. The rate of this process was enhanced by an increase in temperature and/or a decrease in pressure. An explanation was offered in terms of types and mechanisms of molecular events that occur in the glassy state. Time dependent decrease in free volume (and enthalpy) takes place but is not the sole mechanism responsible for the observed increase in Tg. After a certain period of time (which depends on T and P of the environment), additional crosslinking appears to take place.

    Notes: An investigation was conducted to establish property-morphology relationships in polymethylmethacrylate/polyvinylidenefluoride (PMMA/PVDF) blends. All blends were compounded in a twin-screw extruder and then processed by injection molding Mechanical properties of blends of various compositions were studied by dynamic mechanical and impact strength measurements. The presence of crystalline regions in blends was determined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Morphology of fracture surfaces of blends was studied by Spinning Electron Microscopy (SEM). PMMA/PVDF blends were found to form compatible mixtures over a wide range of blend composition. Changes in dynamic mechanical properties upon annealing were found to be a direct function of blond morphology. Electron microscopic evidence showed no signs of phase separation. DSC measurements detected crystalline regions in all blends containing 40 percent or more (by weight) PVDF.

    Notes: Several types of nonreinforced and reinforced epoxy-aluminum adhesive joints were prepared and investigated. High modulus carbon fibers and hollow glass microspheres were used as reinforcement. The amount of curing agent, postcure time, adhesive thickness, and type and amount of reinforcement were varied throughout this study, and their effect on fracture energy was determined. Unstable crack propagation through the adhesive layer was observed. Nodular morphology typified all fracture surfaces of nonreinforced adhesive joints, indicating the existence of an inhomogeneous thermosetting network. Electron microscopic evidence was obtained for plastic flow in crack initiation and crack arrest regions. The nature of this plastic flow was discussed in terms of changes in the resin morphology.

    Notes: An investigation was made on the rheological behavior and physical/mechanical properties of highly filled nylon 6 composites with and without a coupling agent. As fillers, calcium carbonate and calcium silicate were used, and, as coupling agent, two silanes (Union Carbide, A1100 and Y9187) and two titanates (Kenrich Petrochemicals, KR-44 and KR-138) were used. It was found that all the coupling agents used increased the viscosities of the nylon/CaCO3 system. However, the effect of the coupling agents on the viscosity of the nylon/CaSiO3 system seems quite complex; namely, the titanate KR-44 decreased the melt viscosity of the nylon/CaSiO3 composite, whereas the titanate KR-138S and the silane Y9187 increased it. In general, the effectiveness of the coupling agents in improving the physical/mechanical properties of the nylon/CaCO3 and nylon/CaSiO3 composites was marginal. A considerable decrease in glass transition was observed upon exposure of all samples to water, regardless of the type of filler and coupling agent.

    Notes: Several nonreinforced and reinforced crosslinked polyester formulations were prepared and investigated. Solid glass microspheres, with and without coupling agent, were used as reinforcement. All samples were exposed to various cyclic hygrothermal fatigue patterns, differing from one another by the temperature and duration of a cycle. Dynamic mechanical measurements were used to evaluate the effect of hygrothermal fatigue on the mechanical properties of all formulations. Fatigue induced changes in the glass-matrix interphase led to the appearance of relaxation peaks (β′ and β″) in the temperature range between -50°C and -10°C. Electron microscopic evidence was obtained for the existence of nodular morphology on all fracture surfaces. The character of nodular morphology was described in terms of an inhomogeneous thermoset network.

    Notes: An analysis of the cure kinetics of three different formulations composed of tetraglycidyl 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) epoxy resin and diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) was performed. A series of isothermal tests was run, and the experimentally obtained results were checked against the proposed kinetic model. An autocatalyzed mechanism with the overall reaction order of 2 was found to adequately describe the cure kinetics. An increase in reaction rate was observed at higher temperature and higher DDS concentration. For a given formulation, the extent of reaction corresponding to the maximum reaction rate was independent of temperature. A secondary exotherm was detected, particularly in formulations with low DDS concentration, at approximately 40% conversion. At that point, the rate of primary amine-epoxide reaction decreases, and other reactions dominate the curing process. Such a mechanism is likely to cause a formation of an inhomogeneous thermoset morphology.
