Notes: Abstract Experiments on subjective color sensations using a special signal generator and a standard TV monitor (black and white) led to a new hypothesis on information coding in the visual system. According to this hypothesis a trigger signal is required which restores the phase correlation of the pulse-coded spiking of the neurons transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. The ‘shift effect’ (‘ periphery effect’), either artificially induced or initiated by microsaccades, might act as the postulated trigger.

Notes: Summary Bloodstains were produced from probationers who had had syphilis at some time in their lives and from others whose anamnesis had no indication of syphilis. After storage the stain eluates underwent the treponemapallidum-haemagglutination (TPHA) test, with the eluates' IgG content being adapted to a concentration adequate to the test conditions. The results received from the stain eluates of the previous syphilis patients corresponded in 85% of the cases with the serum findings of these probationers. It appears that the TPHA test can already provide clues as to the identity of an unknown stain producer at the beginning of the police investigation. Methodical parallels to dried-blood tests of syphilis as a clinical problem will be discussed.

Notes: Summary In a controlled double-blind changeover study, the efficacy of non-retarded IS-5-MN was compared with that of a commercial slow-release ISDN preparation and placebo medication in 18 patients having coronary heart disease. All patients showed reproducible ischaemia-mediated descending or horizontal ST-segment depressions of at least 0.1 mV in the exercise ECG. In accordance with their previous long-term medication with slow-release ISDN they were given constant doses of IS-5-MN, slow-release ISDN or placebo for periods of 14 days each. In addition to the incidence of angina pectoris attacks and the additional nitroglycerin consumption, the assessment criteria for therapeutic efficacy were the total work carried out on the cycle ergometer, the ST-segment pattern and the circulation parameters systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and myocardial oxygen consumption. The mean incidence of attacks during IS-5-MN therapy (4.1 attacks) was significantly lower (p≤0.05 experimentwise) than during medication with slow-release ISDN (6.6 attacks) or placebo (12 attacks). The mean additional nitroglycerin consumption (in the form of 0.8 mg nitroglycerin capsules) per testing phase and patient was also significantly lower during treatment with IS-5-MN (3 capsules) than during therapy with slow-release ISDN or placebo (5.6 and 13.3 capsules respectively). In comparison with the placebo there was a significant increase in the maximum work performed on the ergometer of 79% during treatment with IS-5-MN and 36% during treatment with slow-release ISDN. Both at individually comparable loads and at maximum load, the ST-segment depressions during IS-5-MN medication were significantly less than during treatment with slow-release ISDN. The results allow the conclusion to be drawn that the same therapeutic effects as with slow-release ISDN may be achieved with lower doses of IS-5-MN.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Aktivität der Adenosindesaminase (EC3.5.4.4.)
Notes: Summary The activity of adenosine deaminase (ADA) (EC3.5.4.4.) was determined in the blood plasma, erythrocytes, and lymphocytes of 23 patients with Hodgkin's disease and partly also in 99 control subjects. The enzyme activities were measured using adenosine as substrate and by analysis of ammonia. No correlation was found between the ADA activities in lymphocytes, erythrocytes, and blood plasma. The lymphocytes of the patients revealed lower ADA activities (U/g protein) than the lymphocytes of control subjects. The ADA activity is not reduced in plasma or erythrocytes. The lower activities of ADA in the lymphocytes of patients may be related to the impaired cell-mediated immunity of the Hodgkin's disease.

Notes: Abstract The electrical properties ofn +-window layers inp-i-n a-Si:H solar cells were characterised as a function ofn +-layer thickness, $$d_{n^ + } $$ , by measuring firstly the activation energyE a of the dark conductivity and secondly the built-in potentialV bi of the cells.E a was found to increase with decreasing $$d_{n^ + } $$ attaining values as high as 0.8 eV for $$d_{n^ + } $$ ≅5nm; bulk values, e.g.E a ≅. 2eV in the amorphous andE a〈0.01 eV in the microcrystalline case, were only observed for $$d_{n^ + } $$ 〉20nm and for $$d_{n^ + } $$ 〉200nm, respectively. In contrast,V bi did not depend on $$d_{n^ + } $$ at all and was further found to be consistent with expectations based on the Fermi level positions in bulkn + andp +-material. As a consequenceE a in very thin films can no longer be considered as a measure of (E C −E F), the distance of the Fermi level from the conduction band edge. The apparent inconsistency inherent to theE a and theV bi results can be resolved by assuming that the deposition of then +-material proceeds via the growth and coalescence of small islands.
