Notes: A microcomputer-based method has been developed for rapid search/match analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns from compound mixtures with user-assembled data bases for specific sample types, e.g. air pollutants, asbestiform minerals, mineral sands and coal ash. Accidental coincidences between stored and measured patterns are largely eliminated using status parameters which are assigned to each data base and measured line. Scaling factors determined for each of the identified compounds afford calculation of relative concentration values. The list of unassigned lines is presented for subsequent analysis with other compact data bases or using more complex search/match methods.

Notes: Abstract The burrowing ophiuroid Amphiura filiformis (O. F. Müller) is a dominant member of a silty sand community in Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland (53°13′16″N; 9°6′30″W). High-density populations in the area (greater than 700 m-2) generally occur in sediment having a silt/clay content of 10 to 20%. On the basis of such numerical prominence, the species has been under investigation at a fixed monitoring station since 1974. Throughout the study period, adult individuals consistently accounted for ca. 95% of the population; annual recruitment was invariably found to be extremely low. Annual desities showed a declining trend to 1980, following which there was some evidence of a rise in numbers. This situation is assessed in the light of what is currently known of A. filiformis from different geographical locations.

Notes: Abstract Pholoë minuta (Fabricius) is a prominent member of the Amphiura filiformis (O.F. Müller) subcommunity in Galway Bay, Ireland. The aim of the present investigation was to study the population dynamics and reproductive cycle of P. minuta in this area. Monthly sampling over a 2 yr period (November 1978–October 1980), at a permanent station (18 m) with a fine sand substrate, revealed a mean density of 96 individuals per 0.1 m2. The width of the fifth elytron was correlated with total body length and was used as a basis for analysing population structure. Four distinct year classes were evident and estimates of recruitment levels and growth rates were calculated. P. minuta is polytelic and reproduces for the first time when approaching 3 yr of age. Spawning occurred in March—April and appeared to be associated with a seasonal low in bottom-water temperature.

Friihsterblichkeits- and Krankheitshäufigkeit betrugen 4% bzw.
Notes: Summary To assess the effects of ageing upon the outcome of total hip replacement, the in-patient records of 100 elderly patients who had undergone Charnley hip replacement procedures within the last decade were reviewed. There were 74 women and 26 men and their mean age was 80 years. Osteoarthritis was the cause of hip disease in 94 patients and rheumatoid arthritis the cause in the remaining six patients. The early mortality and morbidity rates were 4% and 77%, respectively, and the average duration of hospital treatment 42 days. Infection was the commonest post-operative complication followed by mental confusion and adverse drug reactions; multiple complications were a frequent finding. Avoidable complications are indicated and recommendations made regarding the pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of elderly patients.

Notes: Methods are considered for optimizing a conventional Bragg--Brentano X-ray powder diffractometer for the identification of crystalline phases in airborne particulates deposited on membrane filters. The instrumental parameters investigated include detector stepping increment and scan range, Kβ filtration, and the incident beam divergence slit width. Sample-related factors such as substrate material (cellulose ester, polycarbonate and polytetrafluoroethylene), off-axis displacement of the sample and X-ray induced specimen degradation were also studied. Scan times for sample deposits of several hundred μcm-2 are in the vicinity of 24 h with an 800 W tube. These times may be reduced substantially by one or more of the following modifications: rotating anode or synchrotron radiation source, energy-dispersive diffractometry, and Bragg--Brentano diffractometry with a position-sensitive gas detector.
