Notes: Abstract Pyroxenes are considered as ideal solid solutions of some real components (e.g. diopside or orthoenstatite) and some fictive or hypothetical components (e.g. orthodiopside or orthohedenbergite). Using the reversed experimental data in the CaO-MgO-SiO2 system, the Gibbs free energy of formation of fictive orthodiopside and of fictive clinoenstatite have been determined in the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,600 °K. The data on free energies of components in the binary system can be used to extend the fictive component model to the ternary CaSiO3-MgSiO3-FeSiO3 system. Using published phase diagrams on the pyroxene quadrilateral, Gibbs free energy of formation of fictive orthohedenbergite has been calculated. Application of the ideally mixing fictive component model to computation of phase equilibria leads to the determination of compositions of coexisting Fe-Mg-Ca pyroxenes at different temperatures.

Notes: Abstract A phage-typing system ofSalmonella bareilly based on lysogeny is presented. In the present study which comprised 378 strains, fifteen different phage types named ‘a’ through ‘o’ were established. With this system 70.3% of the strains could be typed by using five indicator strains.

Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of 1,1 difluoroethane (Freon-152a) and 1 chloro-1 difluoroethane (Freon-142b) are measured at several pressures in the range 29.7–75.8 kPa and as a function of temperature in the range 280–510 K. The thermal conductivity column instrument is employed, and the experimental values are estimated to be accurate within a maximum uncertainty of ±5.6% at the lowest temperature, which reduces to ±2.4% at the highest temperature. These conductivity values are compared with the predictions of Chapman-Enskog kinetic theory, with the correction factor for the internal energy transport estimated from Hirschfelder's theory, and the Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential. The experimental conductivity data are also utilized to generate the values for the two other transport properties in conjunction with the interrelations obtained between different properties on the basis of kinetic theory. The data on transport properties are employed to give the best possible estimates of Prandtl and Schmidt numbers as a function of temperature.

Notes: Abstract A metal two-bulb apparatus for the measurement of the thermal diffusion factor, α T , especially at temperatures below room temperature, has been designed and constructed. The results for the argon-krypton system are reported, and these cover five mixture compositions (25, 40, 50, 60, and 75% of krypton). The top bulb is maintained at 293.2 K, while the temperature of the lower bulb is varied in the range 102–250 K. The measured α T values are estimated to be accurate within ±4%. The positive minimum in the present α T values is less pronounced than that reported by some other workers, and this is attributed to the operating conditions and to the apparatus geometry.

Notes: Abstract A total of 8579 Salmonella strains received during 1973–1982 were tested for their antibiogram patterns against nine routinely used antibiotics including gentamicin. Of these, 380 strains (4.4%) showed resistance to gentamicin at levels of 10 μg/ml and above. A high degree of resistance to gentamicin was recorded in 1979 (18.7%) and 1980 (9.4%). M.I.C. levels of strains received during 1982 were determined and it was found that some strains had levels as high as 160 μg/ml. The comparative results of gentamicin resistance from 1973 to 1982 are presented and the public health significance of the alarming increase in two years (1979–1980) is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An electronic model of the human middle ear is described. It is based on the qualitative behaviour of the middle ear and includes middle-ear threshold, limiting and amplifying characteristics. The model has the capacity to reject the same range of frequencies as the middle ear. Analogy has been made between electrical quantities and acoustic quantities. The response of the model has been compared with available experimental evidence with reasonable agreement.
