Conclusions 1. Vicinal bis(hydroxylamines): 2,3-bis(hydroxylamino)-2,3-dimethylbutane, its O,O′-diacyl derivative and 3,4-dimethyl-3,4-bis(hydroxylamino)hexane disproportionate, or by the action of either atmospheric oxygen or an equimolar amount of tert-butylhypochlorite undergo cleavage to the corresponding oximes by a synchronous trans-elimination mechanism. 2. Action of excess of oxidizing agent (Br2, tert-butylhypochlorite) on 2,3-bis(hydroxylamino)-2,3-dimethylbutane and its O,O′-diacetyl derivative leads to 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-1,2-diazetine 1,2-dioxide as the result of intramolecular dimerization of the intermediate bis(nitroso)alkane.
