Notes: Mathematical equations based on Fick's law of diffusion were used to model the thin-layer drying of rewetted white and brown rice. Diffusivities of the starchy endosperm and bran were determined by minimizing the sum of squared deviations between the theoretically predicted and observed drying curves. Diffusion coefficients calculated for the rewetted materials were compared to those reported for fresh materials and found to be statistically equivalent. Volumetric data for white and brown rice were collected for use in specifying the mathematical models.

Notes: Thermal and electrical energy usages in a California clingstone peach cannery were monitored to establish energy consumption levels and to identify energy intensive unit operations. Representative processing lines were instrumented with orifice plates for steam flow measurements and with electric watt transducers for electrical power monitoring to yield actual consumption values. Steam use in the lye peelers and retorts accounted for 98% of all energy consumed, indicating that further examination of these operations for modification or equipment redesign should be a first priority for energy conservation. Pumping of liquids and dry conveying of fruit and waste material accounted for 61% of all electrical energy use. Electrical energy use amounted to only 2% of the total energy used, however, on an equivalent fossil fuel use basis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden die Komplexe von Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Tb(III), Dy(III) und Ho(III) mit 5-Chlorpyridin-2,3-diol (CPD) in 50% Dioxan-Wasser bei einer Ionenstärke von 0,1M (NaClO4) und einer Temperatur von 35±0,1 °C potentiometrisch untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The complexes of some rare earths [Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), and Ho(III)] with 5-chloropyridine-2,3-diol (CPD) were studied potentiometrically in 50% dioxane-water at a ionic strength of 0.1M (NaClO4) at 35±0.1 °C. The proton-ligand stability constant ofCPD and the stability constants of its complexes with the metals have been determined using theCalvin-Bjerrum technique as modified byIrving andRossotti. The order of the stability constants is found to be Ce 〈 Pr 〈 Nd 〈 Sm 〈 Tb 〈 Dy 〈 Ho.

Notes: Summary Lycorine, an alkaloid was isolated from the bulbs ofHymenocallis littoralis Salisb. The percentage of lycorine was 0.00083. When sprayed on cabbage leaves this alkaloid inhibited the feeding of the desert locust,Schistocerca gregaria at 0.05% concentration.

Notes: Summary Hybridization followed by continuous selection of lines of barley from different cross-combinations involving high protein-high lysine genotypes and the agronomically superior strains resulted in breaking the negative correlations between 1000 grain weight and high protein content and high DBC values. The methodology of DBC-Kjeldahl protein adopted in the present study is likely to be useful in identifying high lysine lines. The present study has shown considerable variability with respect to protein content and grain weight and has provided interesting genotypes which can be used in synthesising lines with improved nutritional quality and productivity in barley. The success in breaking the undesirable linkages to factors that impair the endosperm development is due to sufficient genetic variability in the initial breeding material as well as the use of suitable breeding procedures like the full-sib mating in the early segregating generations.

Notes: Abstract Effect of addition of various concentrations of stabilizers on poly (1-butene) [IPB] film has been studied, by measuring rate of protection and protective effectiveness through light scattering technique and UV spectral measurements. It has been observed that after a certain percentage of stabilizer addition there was not any further change.

Notes: Abstract Thin films of isotatic poly(l-butene) irradiated with a monochromatic light of 253.7 nm undergo random chain-scission in air in the temperature range of 267.0–313.0 °K. Quantum yields in the absence and presence of different stabilizers have been determined using a potassium ferrioxalate actinometer from 0.0188 to 0.00027 scissions per absorbed photon. Quantum yields for scission were independent of intensity. Light scattering technique was used to determine the rate of links breaking for polymeric systems. A saturation limit in photostabilization of isotatic poly(1-butene) by the stabilizers was achieved beyond 0.8, 0.7, 0.6 and 0.5 wt.% of copper(II) bis(1,3-diphenyltriazine-N-oxide) [CPTO], 1.3-diphenyltriazine-N-oxide) [HPTO], o-phenanthroline bis(1,3-diphenyltriazine-N-oxide)cobalt(II) [CPPTO] and 2,4-diphenyl-6-(2′-hvdroxyphenyl)-s-triazine [PHPT], respectively in the matrix of polymer film.

Notes: Abstract An investigation of the photo-oxidative degradation and stabilization of IIR and SBR in the temperature range of 258 to 313°K in air with a monochromatic light of 366 nm in the absence and presence of various concentrations of the different copper chelates has been described. The stabilizer performance in IIR and SBR was accessed by carbonyl index and quantum yield measurements. The changes of IIR and SBR during the irradiation with an ultra-violet light (366 nm) have been conducted by viscometrically and actinometric techniques. Irradiations were conducted on the films at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 hours and various parameters were obtained.
