Notes: [Auszug] A ground-based optical Doppler technique was used and the observations were made at Longyearbyen (geographic coordinates 78.2 N, 15.6 E) during January 1979. At that time of the year there is unrelieved darkness for the whole day which permitted the continuous observation of the aurora. Although ...

Notes: Abstract The structure and properties of Sn-Ag3Sn directionally-frozen eutectic alloys have been examined over the growth range 2×10−4 to 2×10−1 mm sec−1. The structure is predominantly broken lamellar to 1.3×10−2 mm sec−1, but with relatively poor alignment to the growth direction at smaller growth rates. The tensile and compressive strengths were measured. These increase monotonically to the growth rate at which cellular growth ensues, after which point they fall. The hardness of the eutectic closely parallels the compressive properties as the growth rate increases. Quenching from 200° C produces a marked increase in compressive strength and hardness, attributed to the quench-hardening of the Sn-rich phase.

Notes: Abstract In other studies [1], it has been found that dilute tin alloys containing one of the fast-diffusing solutes Ag, Au and Zn display marked but transitory increases in hardness when quenched from near eutectic temperatures. In this paper, it is shown that an examination of such hardness increases as a function of solute concentration and the equilibrium temperature prior to quenching provides a means of determining the solvus boundaries for the system concerned. Solvus data is derived for Ag, Au and Zn in Sn.

Notes: Abstract The tensile and compressive properties of the unidirectionally solidified Cd-Ge eutectic have been examined. With increasing growth rate the broken-lamellar Ge-rich phase becomes increasingly fibrous. This morphological change was accompanied by a marked increase in tensile properties, similar to the changes observed for both Zn-Ge and Al-Si. However, a less dramatic increase in compressive properties took place. The presence of Cd dendrites did not reduce the UCS (ultimate compressive strength) as has been reported for Cd-Zn and Sb-Ge. Large matrix constraints arise in this eutectic even though the weight fraction of the Ge phase is only 2%.

Notes: Abstract The structure and mechanical properties of Sn-Zn unidirectionally frozen eutectic alloys have been examined over the growth range 5 to 4000mm h−1. The structure is predominantly broken-lamellar below 750mm h−1 but becomes increasingly fibrous at higher growth rates. The yield and ultimate strengths when tested in tension and compression were found to increase monotonically with growth rates up to 1000 mm h−1 above which they assumed near constant values. This behaviour is attributed to some loss of axial growth at higher growth rates. The hardness measured on transverse sections increased over the entire growth rate range. Annealing at near eutectic temperatures followed by quenching increased the strength of alloys grown at less than 750 mm h−1 and decreased that of those grown at higher rates. Similar behaviour was observed in selected Cd-Zn eutectic alloys. The increase in strength is attributed to solid solution hardening and the reduction to structural degradation during annealing. The Sn-rich matrix in this broken-lamellar eutectic appears to contribute significant strengthening to the composite.
