Notes:
Summary Attention is drawn to the difficulty of recognising the possible importance of individual plant descriptors. The difficulty could be reduced if it were possible to examine the inter-relations of all recorded characters. This problem, formerly numerically intractable, has now been solved, and the new method is applied to data from plant introduction programmes of the grass Urochloa and the legume Stylosanthes. It is shown that the method is robust under change of scale in the data, and permits the addition of new characters to an existing data-base. The method appears to offer promise in simplifying the planning of plant improvement programmes.
