Notes: The total and free amino acids of authentic vanilla extracts of Madagascar, Tahiti, Comores, Mexican and Java beans were determined by GLC. Ten samples of single strength Madagascar vanilla extracts gave free amino acids with a mean value, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of 73.3 ppm, 19.88 ppm, and 27.12%, respectively; this compares to the total amino acids with a mean value, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation of 295.71 ppm, 31.10 ppm, and 10.52%, respectively. The ratio of free amino acids to total amino acids for Madagascar single strength vanilla extracts gave a mean, standard deviation, and a coefficient of variation of 0.25, 0.64 and 2.58%, respectively. In addition, the vanillin, nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium were determined by spectrophotometric procedures for the above mentioned beans.

Notes: [Auszug] The effect of peripherally administered muscimol on the striatal levels of DA and its major metabolite, HVA, are given in Table 1. The concentration of striatal HVA was increased significantly at 0.5, 1 and 2 h after muscimol (2 mg per kg, i.p.) injection, whereas the concentration of DA was not ...

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of 1-phenyl-6-(phenylthio)-3H-2,1,3-benzoxathiazolium-3-olate, C18H13NO2S2, has been determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic, space groupP21,Z = 2, witha = 8.757(2),b = 8.428(2),c = 11.332(3) Å, and β = 101.34(2) °. All intensity measurements were made at room temperature on an Enraf-Nonius CAD-4 automatic diffractometer using monochromatized, MoKα radiation. The final agreement factorR was 0.029 for 1465 contributing reflections. The nitrophenyl moiety is essentially planar, and the two phenylthio rings are canted at 74 ° and 87 ° to it. There is a possible nonbonded attraction between the nitro group and theortho-sulfur.

Notes: Abstract Polyoxymethylene specimens with single crystal texture were produced by irradiation of needle-shaped trioxane crystals subsequently post-polymerized at fixed temperatures between 30 and 60°C. A clear dependence of polymer conversion on irradiation dose and polymerization temperature was revealed. The polymer morphology consisted of mutually aligned fibrils, half of which were chain-extended crystallites with their molecular axes coincident with the specimen axis. The remaining fibrils consisted of folded chains in a “twin” configuration. The degree of order in the specimens was analysed in terms of the arcing of X-ray diffraction spots. There existed an intrinsic level of misorientation of molecules which depended on the post-polymerization temperature, plus a misalignment due to displacement of fibrils on the removal of unreacted monomer. Finally, the mechanical properties were investigated and the Young's modulus was found to approach closely its theoretical limit at the conversion maximum. The results are interpreted on the basis of a simple morphological model.

Notes: Abstract All features of the X-ray diffraction pattern of polyoxymethylene produced by radiation-induced, solid-state polymerization of trioxane have been examined. The heavy radial streaking observed on both our own and on previous workers' patterns has been explained and the hexagonal unit cell dimensions have been calculated. We have computed sets of parameters for chain configurations which could exist within the accuracy of the measurement, and have shown that each configuration arises as a result of various indexing of the diffraction pattern. In conclusion we argue that such helical structures are better described in terms of their average chain parameters rather than by attempting to define an exact unit cell height or identity period. Finally, we have calculated a set of values for the parameters which exactly describe the polyoxymethylene chain.

Notes: Abstract A thermistor probe was developed for implantation with the peritoneum in the rat for the continuous measurement of core temperature. The implanted probe was exteriorized via a miniature connector mounted on the calvaria and attached via a spring cable to a commercial slip-ring assembly which allowed complete freedom of movement for the animal in a behavioral chamber as its body temperature was measured. In this fashion, artifact-free temperature records were obtained with an accuracy of ±0.1°C for a continuous period as long as 8 weeks. Compared with telemetric devices, this direct method provided a less complex measurement system which is more economicals and is well-suited to short-term behavioral-physiological experiments. This system has been utilized successfully in experiments involving the peripheral and intracranial administration of drugs and in studies of fever.
