Notes: Abstract Isopiestic and viscosity measurements on aqueous sodium cholate-lecithin solutions are reported at high concentrations which include the physiological region as a lower limit. At low cholate concentration, the addition of lecithin increases the activity of water, consistent with earlier studies showing increases of micellar weights. At higher cholate concentrations, the activity of water is independent of lecithin concentrations. Studies of binary solutions of bile acid salts and detergents agree very closely with earlier work.

Notes: Abstract Precise conductance measurements are reported for sodium, potassium, and cesium salts in methanol and acetonitrile solutions containing cyclic polyethers dibenzo-18-crown-6 and dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6. Decreases in equivalent conductance caused by the addition of a cyclic polyether to solutions of constant ionic strength were analyzed by nonlinear least squares to give association constants and equivalent conductances of the cation-polyether complex. The selectivity observed for the complexing is a function not only of ionic size but also of solvent.

Notes: [Auszug] The membranes operating in our laboratories at present are summarised in Table 1. These membranes depend on mobile carriers which react rapidly and selectively with the solutes being transported. Two mechanisms are involved. In the first (Fig. 1), the flux of the protons which supply the energy is ...

Notes: Ternary diffusion coefficients at 25°C. of the system 0.5 g./cc. d-tartaric acid - 0.5 g./cc. l-tartaric acid-water are reported. The results allow experimental verification of the theory for the diffusion of two indistinguishable solutes and clearly illustrate the difference between mutual and tracer diffusion. Moreover, the results allow calculation of ternary mass transfer coefficients and ternary tray efficiencies for the case of two similar species dissolved in a third.

Notes: The experiments reported here show how diffusion rates in liquids can be increased by as much as an order of magnitude by use of coupled diffusion fluxes in mixed solvents. Solutes whose diffusion can be accelerated in this way include simple electrolytes, essential oils, dyes, and antibiotics. These increases are primarily caused by thermodynamic interactions and can be estimated from solubilities.

Notes: Cyclic Polyethers acting as mobile carriers in facilitated transport can cause changes of as much as three orders of magnitude in the fluxes of various cations across liquid membranes. The cyclic polyether dibenzo-18-crown-6 (2,3,11,12-dibenzo-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadeca-2,11-diene) was used in this work to achieve such a large selectivity. The results show that a primary factor leading to the selectivity is the ratio of unsolvated cation radius to polyether central ring radius. The implication is that by selecting a polyether with a desired central ring radius, any two cations of slightly different radius can be separated efficiently.

Notes: The diffusion coefficients D of n-hexane and of naphthalene in a series of hydrocarbon liquids with viscosities μ from 5 · 10-4 to 5 kg m-1 sec-1 (0.5 to 5000 centipoise) have been measured at 25°C with a one Savart plate wavefront-shearing interferometer. This apparatus allows direct determinations at effectively infinite dilution. The values obtained suggest that for a small solute diffusing in a large solvent \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {D\mu ^{2/3} } & = & {{\rm constant}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} a result consistent with earlier studies. The exponent of 2/3 may be rationalized on the basis of the Eyring rate theory.

Notes: Measurements of iodine dissolution rates in supercritical carbon dioxide and other supercritical fluids show when the iodine flux in these systems can be made fast. For these systems, the dominant factor in achieving this fast flux is the solubility; increases in diffusion coefficient have less effect. An approximate guide for estimating these fluxes is developed and compared with the experimental results.
