Notes: Flexible model results for the —NH2 inversion in vinylamine are compared with microwave data published by Lovas et al. [3]. The information available on the spacing of inversion levels is found to be sufficient to rule out a planar equilibrium structure. Shifts of rotational constants upon excitation of the inversion are calculated for two predicted paths of motion derived from PRDDO geometry optimization results obtained by MiiIler & Brown [2]. Partial geometry optimization yields a path inconsistent with experiment but the path obtained from complete optimization produces shifts in excellent agreement with the observed shifts. A potential energy function compatible with experimental data on spacing of inversion levels is calculated from the observed inertia defects. The inversion angle at equilibrium is slightly smaller than the angle predicted from PRDDO calculations, and the barrier to inversion, ΔV = 1.08 ± 0.07 kcal/mol, is approximately half the PRDDO value.

Notes: Removal of methane from a helium stream by adsorption on Columbia SXC activated carbon was studied experimentally and theoretically. A mathematical model for the process was developed and the governing differential equations were solved numerically. The model incorporates heat and mass transfer resistances within and around the adsorption particle. Wall effects and moderate heat loss to the surroundings are also included. The required heat and mass transfer correlations were obtained from the literature. Simple expressions were developed to determine the relative resistances for heat and mass transfer within and around the adsorption particles.

Notes: Two time delay compensation techniques, the Smith predictor and the analytical predictor, are used for bottom composition control of a pilot scale methanol-water distillation column. The closed-loop performance of the two predictor schemes is compared to that for a proportional-integral controller in experimental and simulation studies. The predictors resulted in improved control for both set point and feed flow disturbances.

Notes: A formula has been determined which satisfactorily represents, for the existing data, the frictional characteristics of the turbulent flow of a dilute viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid in a pipe. This formula contains two elastic fluid parameters, one of which is strongly dependent on both polymer solute and concentration and the other appears to be a constant and independent of the polymer solutes which were used in this report. A rheometer is proposed based on this formula which should be useful in classifying fluids of this type.

Notes: Because of the increase in cost of foreign oil, ethylene costs have increased markedly within the last several years. There is presently a sizeable incentive to reduce raw material costs for basic polymer manufacture. The polyketones, synthesized from ethylene and CO, and the polysulfones, synthesized from ethylene and SO2, both utilizing high energy radiation, offer one such possibility. The process has the additional advantage that CO and SO2, usually considered as.wastes and pollutants from fossil fuel burning power plants, are converted to useful materials. The polyketones and polysulfones formed by radiation-induced polymerization from the gas phase below 100°C have been found to be high molecular weight polymers which, depending on composition, either melt with difficulty or decompose at temperatures of 250°C or higher. The higher temperature (〉100°C) catalyst-induced reaction produces low molecular weight waxes. Design calculations indicate that for a G value of 10, 000 and 50 percent energy deposition efficiency, it would take 331 megacuries of Co6O to conserve 2 billion pounds of ethylene or 25 percent of the overall U.S. consumption in the PE market by substituting CO and SO2. This savings amounts to as much as $280 million at today's market price. Electron machine radiation with a 25 percent energy deposition efficiency requires a total beam power of 9800 KW. The use of machine radiation is preferred because of safety, availability, and lower initial investment. The challenge presented by the development of these substituted polymer systems depends on (1) the determination of the uniqueness of the radiation process and confirming the yields with electron machine radiation, (2) the processability and market acceptability of the substituted polymers, and (3) the ability to design an efficient radiation process reactor.

Notes: Temperature distribution at the exit of the leakage gap is of interest for a number of problems. For the calculation of temperatures, the leakage flow may be considered to be a pure drag flow to a good approximation. In the Newtonian case, thermal development length may be expressed in terms of gap height as L ≈ 3/8Pe · δ;usually this is less than the available gap length. Pe is the Peclet number and δ the height of leakage gap. Therefore the existing flow may be considered fully developed. For power law fluids, numerical calculations lead to results of the same order. Martin's results therefore may be applied to the flow at the exit of the leakage gap.

Notes: Star-shaped block copolymers were used as heat activated adhesives in glass to glass joints. The branches consisted in either AB or ABA poly(styrene-b-isoprene) block copolymers. Tensile shear strengths of simple lap joints were measured for star block copolymers differing in the length or in the number of branches. Values higher than those of the corresponding linear species were obtained. These results were related to the presence of chemical junction points created by coupling the linear copolymers.
