    Notizen: Abstract Embryogeny in the nasturtium is characterized by the development of a large, tripartite suspensor and storing cotyledons. A light and electron microscopic study revealed an early diversification of the plastids in the various regions of the suspensor and the embryo proper. Amyloplasts are found in the developing cotyledons of the heart-like embryo, while chloroplasts occur within the meristematic part of the embryo and the adjacent portion of the suspensor. The cells between the meristem and the storing cotyledons display undifferentiated leukoplasts, whereas leukoplasts with an electron-dense matrix occur in the basal cell mass of the embryo-suspensor. Etioplasts develop in several cells of the placental haustorium of the suspensor. The carpel haustorium shows rather undifferentiated leukoplasts, which are transformed into electron-dense plastids during autolysis of the suspensor. This early plastidal differentiation in discussed with respect to its control and functional significance.

    Notizen: Abstract The relationship between RNA synthesis and morphology of the nucleolus-organizing polytene chromosomes in the highly endopolyploid suspensor cells of Phaseolus vulgaris has been studied by actinomycin D treatment, temperature lowering, and H3-uridine autoradiography. Actinomycin D and low temperature induce a condensation of the giant chromosomes, particularly of the nuoleolus organizers and of the intranucleolar regions of the chromosomes. RNA synthesis occurs in the extended state of the chromosomes, but it ceases in the highly condensed state caused by the treatment of the cells either with actinomycin D or with low temperature.

    Notizen: Abstract The basic (2 C) nuclear DNA content has been determined for the first time in four primitive angiosperms by means of scanning densitometry of Feulgen-stained nuclei. The mean values obtained are the following:Liriodendron tulipifera L. (2n = 38): 1.58 pg;Magnolia soulangiana Soul-bod. (2n = 76): 11.95 pg;Cinnamomum camphora T. Nees (2n = 24): 1.18 pg;Illicium anisatum L. (2n = 28): 6.72 pg. These values do not represent extremes, but rank among low DNA amounts. All species display at least low degress of endopolyploidy.
