Phosgen reagiert mit rac. α-Amino- bzw. rac. α-Methylamino-propiophenon zu N, N′-Bis[1-oxo-1-phenyl-propyl-(2)]-harnstoffen 1 a bzw. 1 b. Bei deren Reduktion mit Natriumboranat in Methanol entstehen entsprechende α-Aminoalkohole 3, aus denen man nach der sauren Hydrolyse (±)threo-2-Amino- und (±)threo-2-Methylamino-1-phenylpropanol-(1) erhält. Das am Stickstoff unmethylierte Derivat 1a ist nicht mit Aluminiumisopropylat reduzierbar, weil zuvor Kondensation zu 2,5-Dimethyl-3, 6-diphenylpyrazin eintritt. Vom gleichen Reduktionsmittel werden die beiden Ketogruppen des N-Methylderivates 1 b einzeln nacheinander reduziert. Das Endprodukt ist dem der Natriumboranat-Reduktion identisch.
