Acid-catalyzed substitutions on (perchlorofluoromethylthio)pyrroles and their agro-biological activitiesIn the presence of C4F9SO3H the (perhalomethylthio)pyrroles 1a-c react with Cl3-nFnCSCl (n = 1-3) to give mixtures of the 2,5- and 2,4-disubstituted pyrroles 2a-f and 3a-h. 2a and 3a react with CF3SCl (catalyst CF3SO3H) yielding 2,3,5-tris (trifloromethylthio)pyrrole (4a), which under similar conditions reacts further to give 2,3,4,5-tetrakis (trifluoromethylthio)pyrrole (5). As a by-product during the conversion of 3a to 4a 2,3,4-tris (trifluoromethylthio)pyrrole (4b) is formed. The pyrroles 2a, 4a and 5 form the mercury salts 6a-c; compound 5 yields also a silver salt 7. The 1H- and 19F-NMR. spectra are discussed and the agro-biological properties of the compounds investigated.

    Notes: Three distinct cellobiase components were isolated from a commercial Trichoderma viride cellulase preparation by repeated chromatography on DEAE cellulose eluting by a salt gradient. The purified cellobiase preparations were evaluated for physical properties, kinetics, and mechanism. Results from this work include: (1) development of a one step enzyme purification procedure using DEAE-cellulose; (2) isolation of three chromatographically distinct, yet kinetically similar, cellobiase fractions of molecular weight of ∼76,000; (3) determination of kinetics which shows that cellobiase hydrolyzes cellobiose by a noncompetitive mechanism and that the product, glucose, inhibits the enzyme, and (4) development of an equation, based on the mechanism of cellobiase action, which accurately predicts the time course of cellobiose hydrolysis over an eightfold range of substrate concentration and conversions of up to 90%. Based on the data presented in the paper, it is shown that product inhibition of cellobiase significantly retards the rate of cellobiose hydrolysis.

    Notes: The thermodynamic properties of vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) states near the critical locus of mixtures are correlated in very close analogy with the techniques used to correlate the properties of pure fluids near a critical point. The only mixture parameters used in the correlation are the values of pressure, volume, temperature, and mole fraction (PVTx) along the physical critical locus. We illustrate the power of the present approach by correlating the rather extensive PVTx data that exist near the critical loci of the binary mixtures: CO2—C2H6, SF6—C3H8, and C8H18—C3H8. Nearly all the data within 10% of the critical temperature may be described within their accuracy despite the occurrence of critical azeotropy or large regions of retrograde condensation.

    Notes: Methylperoxy radicals were generated by the flash photolysis of azomethane-oxygen mixtures. The observed broadband spectrum of the CH3O2 radical is similar, but not identical to those reported previously. The CH3O2 decay followed second-order kinetics at high CH3O2 concentrations with k4' = (2.5 ± 0.3) × 108 liter/mol·sec (23 ± 2°C); 2CH3O2 → products (4). Because of the potential loss of CH3O2 through the reactions with HO2 and CH3O radicals subsequently formed in this system, simulations suggest that the true k4 is in the range: 2.5 × 108 ≥ k4 ≥ 2.3 × 108 liter/mol·sec. Deviations from linearity of the plot of the reciprocal of the CH3O2 absorbance versus time were seen at long times and were attributed to the reaction (5) with an apparent rate constant k5' ⋍ (1.6 ± 0.4) × 105 liter/mol·sec; CH3O2 + Me2N2 → product (5). The CH3O2-SO2 reaction, CH3O2 + SO2 → products (16), was studied by observing CH3O2 decay in flashed mixtures of Me2N2, O2, and SO2. The results gave the apparent second-order rate constant k16' ⋍ (6.4 ± 1.4) × 106 liter/mol·sec. It appears likely that each occurrence of reaction (5) and (16) is followed by the loss of an additional CH3O2 radical and that k5 ⋍ k5'/2 and k16 ⋍ k16'/2. Our findings suggest that a significant fraction of the SO2 oxidation in a sunlight-irradiated NOx-RH-polluted atmosphere, may occur by reaction with CH3O2 as well as from the HO and HO2 reactions.

    Notes: Sickle cell hemoglobin (hemoglobin S) contains valine instead of glutamic acid in position 6 of the β-chain. Few detectable conformational differences exist between hemoglobin S and normal adult hemoglobin (hemoglobin A). Following loss of oxygen, sickle cell hemoglobin (hemoglobin S) self associates to form a liquid crystal phase which distorts the erythrocyte into the sickle shape thereby resulting in the clinical symptomology associated with sickle cell anemia. This gel contains deoxyhemoglobin S monomers and polymers in equilibrium. The polymerization process is known to have a negative temperature coefficient, to be pH dependent, and to be extremely dependent on hemoglobin S concentration. The polymerization of deoxyhemoglobin S appears to be entropically driven and occurs in two kinetic phases, a delay period and a rapid polymerization process. The polymer consists of tubules containing six or eight strands of deoxyhemoglobin S tetramers which align with one another. Each strand is would around the tubule with a pitch of about 3000 Å, but the precise nature of the intermolecular hemoglobin S contacts is not known. Subsequent alignment of the tubules occurs and results in the tactoids observed in (S/S) erythrocytes. While many of the details of polymer formation and structure remain to be elucidated, several attempts to chemically alter the sickling phenomenon have been carried out. As yet, however, no satisfactory chemical treatment has been discovered.
