Notizen: Abstract Ethologic analysis has been used to study the behavioural effects following injection of delta-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) in mice. After a dose level of 1.6 mmol ALA/kg, male and female mice showed periods of immobility and scanned less frequently than saline-injected controls. Exploration of the cage was significantly reduced in frequency in treated males, many elements of social and sexual investigation were reduced in treated females, and no elements of aggression were seen in treated males. Gait was abnormal and movement lethargic in animals showing the greatest degree of immobility. Righting reflexes and the response to stimuli of noise and touch remained normal. After a dose level of 0.8 mmol ALA/kg, no significant behavioural effects were detectable.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of cannabis at two dose levels on the behaviour shown by male mice encountering untreated females has been studied by ethological analysis and compared with the behaviour of control males in a similar situation. At a dose level of 12.5 mg cannabis/kg, male mice showed a significant reduction in Mounts and Attempted Mounts although other categories of behaviour were not affected. At a dose level of 25.0 mg/kg, not only Mounts and Attempted Mounts but also other forms of Social and Sexual Investigation were significantly decreased by administration of cannabis, Aggression was reduced and periods of Immobility occurred. A decrease in the frequency and increase in the duration of Non-Social Activity were seen in these mice as a result of the periods of Immobility following cannabis administration.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of feeding cannabis at a level of 0.4% in the diet has been studied by an ethological analysis of encounters between male mice. Administration of cannabis to dominant males resulted in a reduction of non-social activity and an increase in flight and in social and sexual investigation when compared with untreated controls, but the behaviour of subordinate males was not significantly altered by cannabis. One week after withdrawal of cannabis, the behaviour of dominant males showed a rebound effect with increase in aggression. Nevertheless, by a preference feeding test it was demonstrated that the treated mice were not dependent on the cannabis-containing diet but consumed the control diet in preference.
